Fixing PTO on a Massey 1215

I finally got the tranny off the back of the bell housing. Sorry no pictures yet. It was pretty late when I finally got it apart.

I looked at the bell housing where the clutch is in contemplation of splitting the tractor there, but that looked like a BIG deal. The top of the bell housing is burried under the deck cowling and the fuel tank. I looked elsewhere figuring there still had to be a better way.

I had to take the 4 wheel drive shaft off the front and disconnect all the Hydrostatic controls. I still had to wiggle it just right and say the right voodoo incantation to get it all to come apart, but the tranny is on the workbench now.

Tonight my plan is to take the tranny apart to put the new PTO shaft in. I'm also looking to see what I need to fix the 4 wheel drive.

That's some good reading and a great project too. I wish I could help but I know nothing about Massey and I am too far to give you a hand. Keep those pictures coming, I am sure you will be able to fix it after few bleading knuckles and such:)

Excellent. Keep us posted, and more pics please.

Here's a picture of the transmission sitting on the bench ready for "surgery"

I got the transmission taken apart tonight. It's surprisingly complex for only having two gears.

I've got good news and bad news. I'll start with the good news... The problem with the 4 wheel drive was nothing more than a bad snap ring. The attached picture is inside the transmission exactly as I found it. The snap ring had come loose and allowed the 4 wheel drive gear to move forward so that it wouldn't engage. That will be cheap and easy to fix.

Now for the bad news... I'm pretty sure I have the wrong replacement PTO shaft. The splines on the new shaft are just slightly wider than the splines on the old shaft. the problem is that the sliding gear that engages or disengages the PTO won't even go on the shaft, let alone allow it to slide.

I'm going in to the dealer tomorrow to see if we can figure out what's up.

I'm so pleased with myself that I have gotten this far. I'm starting to get a little nervous about putting it all back together. I'm good at jigsaw puzzles, but this might be a stretch. I've tried to keep things set out in the right order that they came out in and I've tried to pay attention to how it all was. My concern is that in the time it will take to get the new parts, I will forget some critical detail.

I've attached a few pictures just for fun. The first picture is the old PTO shaft. The second picture is all the rest of the guts of the transmission spilled out on the bench.

When you go to the dealer, tell them that you want a sign-on for the AGCO on-line parts. That way you can see the parts brake down and also see what parts you need to order.

Thanks. I did get them to sign me up for the on-line parts catalog. It's nice to have that.

I didn't post this last night, but I got a shot of the sludge of metal pieces that was on the bottom of the transmission housing. This tractor has been used hard.

The guy at the dealer could only scratch his head about why the gear wouldn't slide on the shaft. He looked up the part number on the tag that was on the shaft when I got it, and it crossed referenced back to the Massey 1215. I took both shafts in to show him that the gear slides perfectly on the one shaft but won't even go on the new one.

He pointed out to me that the gear had some pretty good wear on the one side of each tooth. Since every thing else goes onto this new shaft fine, I just ordered a new gear. Since the catalog specs that shaft as going to a Massey 1215, hopefully the gear from the same catalog will fit the new shaft.

Having seen the wear on that gear, I decided to check out the other gears in the transmission when I got home. There is one that is really bad. I think that's where the metal sludge came from. I'll call back on Monday and order that gear too. I want to fix anything that I can now so that I don't have to break this tractor down again for a long time

Is that something that can be done via email? I have emailed a dealer about it.

I assume that the 1215 is fairly equal to our 1523??

You could probably at least sign up over the phone.

The 1215 is a little smaller than the 1523. 18.5 hp with a 15 hp PTO. It's little.
