You also have the option of a hydraulically powered mower.

I have a Terrain King (now owned by Alamo) 15' hydraulically powered mower. Cuts like a beast and as I understand on the newer versions, if you raise a wing, it will stop the movement of the blade (might not slow the inertia down fast enough for you, I have no clue)

Bought mine used, guy said he never replaced blades (they don't look worn like worn blades might look) so the blades are something like 20 years old.

Cuts like a bandit, no shafts to be a glaring danger, you want to make a sharp turn? Have at it.... I can essentially take the outside wheel on the mower, (like turning around a tree for example) and turn sharp enough to pivot around that wheel.

If there's a negative to the hydraulic mower (my opinion) is that sandwiched between the mower & PTO you have to have the pump and a speed changer (multiplier to take the 540 PTO up to 2,160). There are NO "quick changes" with all this hardware on there. My 1066 is essentially a dedicated mowing machine. I have to reallyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy want and need to take the mower off, to take the mower off. But it cuts like a madman. This was waist high on the sprouts and just under knee height for the undergrowth with again, 20 year dullish blades.

When I bought mine, I liked the idea of having a wing shut down if raised... (doesn't do that on my model) The edges of the farm can used to be trimmed back and I had thoughts..... but it didn't work and the first time I raised the wing, I discovered I really, really, REALLY didn't like seeing that blade spinning back there with me in the line of rotation (should it detach).... so I very quickly struck that off my list.

I went and looked at the 5 Mowers today.
Bush Hog 2215: $15,800
Bush Hog 2815: $17,900
Rhino 4150: 18,900
Landpride 3712: $14,400
Modern Viper 12: $12,100.00


The are all good looking mowers. The 2215 was not quite as light built as I thought they might be and definitely interested in that one. But as stated earlier, a 12' may work better for me since I have to mow around trees and etc. A few questions I have.


1.) Can you mow with a flex wing with the wings up? Or 1 wing up if the hydraulics allow? If I get a 15', there will be some place I need to mow a more narrow area.

2.) The Modern Viper 12' seems to be a fairly built mower. I do not personally like the galvanized color, but that is just me. Does anyone have any complaints or experiences with the Modern?

3.) The Landpride 3712 seems to be the heaviest built 12' but still a little light for 100 HP tractor. Any thoughts on this? I am trying to purchase one to last a long time.

4.) Any other heavy 12'mowers that I need to be looking at?

You can if you have 3 sets of remotes. I do it all the time with my CX 15s. We have several customers that need brush cut back from edges of fields and I do it along edges of farms which I grow hay on. I have 41 field cutting customers we serve with these mowers.

1. Controls overall cut height of the deck
2. Right wing
3. Left wing.

Surprised you have not looked at Deeres offerings. They make an amazing flex wing mower. I have owned and operated Woods and Bush hog and honestly, Deere is nicer. It has a dual deck design (I think some other brands have caught on and offer them, too now) and for the life of me, I cant understand why anyone would buy a single layer deck unless all they cut is grass. The mower looks fairly new even after 6-7 years of commercial use. Mine look great.

I can take my Deeres into 3 trees, push them over and pulverize them and then cut grass with it. Mine have air ride suspensions with thick rubber bump stop air bags. :thumbsup: Really takes away the harshness of the bumps.

The CX (and HX) mowers are very heavy built, have endured thousand of acres of brush clearing and field mowing in my business and I will probably buy another one the next time around.

Based upon the list and prices above, the 2215 appears to be the best buy of the 15 machines and the Modern Viper in the 12 class. The differences in the 2215 and 2815 are significant if you look closely. For starters, the 2815 has a 7 gauge deck vs. a 10 gauge deck on the 2215. The front hitch is more robust on the 2815 and more importantly to me, the rear axles and frame are heavier built. I would also look at the Deere offerings. They have made some changes in their models since I looked at them 3-4 years ago. I came close to buying a CX15 with spring suspension in lieu of the expensive air bags.

I believe you can mow up to 45 degrees up with the Bush Hogs. If your tractor has (3) rear remotes you can raise the wings independently.

I would definitely buy a 15 width mower.
