I must have hit a rock and for some reason the sheer pin for the blower didnt go off in time. The impeller literally destroyed the housing to the point where the impeller was locked up (two of the three fins were outside of the "housing" causing it to lock. all the paint broke on the welds. It was a mess.

I took it down to my barn and with the precision of a 20 lb mallet, managed to get it blowing snow again. I do have KCC insurance on it with a 250 deductable, but im sure the dealer would have just bent everything back, and maybe put some paint on it. I have since picked up a bag of sheer pins, both for auger and impeller.

Andy,

for that amount of damage i would drop the $250.00USD deductable
replace it and scavenge the old one for the rotator handle and parts,
augers, brearings, chute, gear box, sprockets, right angle shaft, P.T.O. shafts and chain and offer the body to the scrap gods for a piece offering to calm their nerves, they would only scavenge it when you turn it in anayway.

Hi Andy
It doesnt sound like the shear bolts did what they were supposed to do. I have broken several shear bolts (both primary and secondary) over the years and they do a good job of stopping things before any damage happens. You might want to check to see that the proper shear bolts were installed. The manual tells you how to identify them.

I love mine too...
At the end of last season I was clearing some of the yard so our old lab could have some space in the NH winter and I accidentally sucked up her rope.
It turned the tractor 90 degrees and wrapped the rope around the auger pulling it directly towards the house. I never shut down the machine so fast in my life.

It pulled the auger out of it's receptical on one side, bend the frame a little and damaged the receiving bearing on one side. I spent a fair amount of time hammering it back together and replacing the damaged bearing, but it seems good this year. I thought about using the insurance, but figured that the dealer would just do the same thing I could do for $60.00 in parts and I'd end up in the same place...

I love this machine more in the winter with snow than I do any other time of the year. It's a beast...

I'm going on my 2nd winter and love the one I have. You really need to adjust your skid shoes up to so that you're not picking up every single stone there is first off.I'm going to build a different set as I have some slopes along side the driveway and in the back yard where I keep a large dog run open that I have a problem with which I think I can cure. I use winter blend bar and chain oil in an old rear end grease bottle that makes it a snap to oil the chain which is easy to forget to do.I have a gravel driveway so stones are
always a problem.

PS: the only advantage to the rear mount is being able to tilt it more to avoid digging in.I'll put up with lots of dents and **** maybe even a replacement window in the house over the pain in the neck from trying to see where you're going while operating it.Been there done that and would never go back to that pita.

All,

Thanks for the advice. It has gotten worse. The sheer pins that were in it at the time of the "silent accident" were what came with the blower. It seems like the replacement ones I bought are more apt to break, especially the two auger ones. It looks like ***** right now and only has about 5 hours on it. Before I pay it off this year, im going to use my $250 deductable and ask my local dealer to give me a new box, augers and impeller. They all have massive wear on them already. The metal around the front of the impeller (behind the impeller) is very thin, and is just sheering away. You can kinda see from this pic... (sorry its a camera phone pic).

Thanks again guys for all the friendly advice. It still shoots snow like no ones business so Im probably going to get through this winter before I claim anything. Also, tried adjusting the shoes all the way down. Apparently its not enough because im still getting little rocks in there from the stone driveway, granted not as bad, but still.

Andy

Leonz,

Talked to my dealer today and even showed him pictures. He said no problem, they will rebuild it in the spiring with new box, impeller, and possibly augers. That will be a good $250 well spent. Now I just need to devise a system so it doesnt happen again. I had my skids down as far as they would go.

Thanks for the advice!

Howdy and happy new year,

look for my postings on adding a screen to the bottom
4 inches of the snow blower housing using concrete
reinforcing mesh, angle iron 1 inch flat stock to solve
the rock issue forever.

The snow blower will work fine and you and the blower
will no longer have to worry about rocks.

what you need-

2 pieces of angle iron 4-6 inches+ long for the end walls of the snow blower
3/16 or 1/4 inch

1/4 allen bolts long enough to pass through the strap iron sandwich with the reinforcing mesh and 2 washers between them- be sure about the location of the cross auger to assure it does not hit the nuts used to secure the sandwich, 1/4 inch nylock nuts and flat washers for both the bolt head and the nylock nuts.

4 pieces of 1 inch flat stock the width of the snow blower

one section of concrete reinforcing mesh to create the stone barrier
cut 4-6 inches wide and as long as the snow blower is wide for the screen.

Drill the angle iron and sides of the snow blower to mount the angle irons.

Drill 2 holes at the top and bottom of the angle irons for the strap iron sections to mount them.

Drill the strap iron pieces to mount the reinforcing mesh - a bolt hole every six inches should be plenty to anchor the screen.

start your first bolts with 4 very long 1/4 inch bolts to hang everything on both ends of the blower.

place the strap iron on the upper lower and temporary bolts,

place the reinforcing mesh section on the long bolts

place the second pair of strap iron pieces on the long bolts.

Start installing the smaller allen bolts, washers and nylock nuts to hold the mesh sandwich together on the upper and lower straps and finish that part.
Bew sure to purchase enough flat washers to sandwich the mesh between the strap iron on both sides.

Do it this way

after you place the first smaller bolts and washers on the inner strap iron piece with a washer, then the mesh, then another washer, then the second flat stock piece then the washer and then finally the last washer and nylock nuts tightened down to secure the sandwich and your done.

take the first longer bolt out and replace it with the smaller allen bolt and washers and nylock nut remove the other upper longer bolt and do the same thing again then you can finish the lower hanger bolts quickly.

If you have a work bench you can make the mesh sandwich on the bench
and then simply connect the four corners at the angle iron pieces previously drilled and mounted on the blower side walls

have fun :thumbsup::cool:

Now that I looked at your JPG image-

Removing the auger will be easy to do.

The auger sweep will allow you to loosen the
set screws on the open bearing and slide it right
out and then you can slide the other one out
the same way.

After that you can drill out the old fittings and
install the new fittings the way I described:thumbsup::cool:.
