Ford 1710
Hey guys I have the opportunity to buy a nice Ford 1710 tractor with only 520 hours on it from my boss who's selling his house. He'll sell it to me for 2k, this will be my first tractor. It has a front end loader and 4 or 5, 3 point hitch attachments. The back tires have plenty of tred left but the side walls are starting to crack and the valve is rusted out and leaking. It will need two new back tires, or can I just put a tube in them?

Also its been stored outside for at least 5-6 years that I know of. I'm sure it will need the oil and trans fluid and filter changed as its been sitting for the last few years unused. I'm also going to grease all the certs. I started it the other day and it fired right up. Is there anything else I should know about this tractor? Will it be able to move dirt to help build up a small dam wall (5ft) thats starting to deteriorate?
Thanks guys!

2K, you find yourself a "diamond in the rough". It is a total steal in broad daylight. Congrats. It is a great tractor. it has much similarity to my 1700. Can search the forum for 1700 and you will find a ton of good info. It'll do all you asked above , may be slow on dam project. remember, it is not a dozer. That will be a great early or late fall. You will not regret this great purchase. :)

I'd jump all over that!

Awesome! I'm glad to hear it's a good deal. So what can I do about the dry rotting tires?

Nothing you can't do to repair the tire. I'd just use the heck out of it. It is such a fantastic deal that you come way ahead even with two new tires or even second hand. I would not worry about it at all. Actually looking at the pic can't see the tire in bad shape at all. might take some close up picture for a visual eval. what you have would easily go around 8-10 k so you got room to spend a few more bucks. I know guys here same with me would salivate on a deal like that :) now , does the lift, loader, pto and gears work?

JC,

Yes everything works fine, there looks to be some oil residue where it was leaking out underneath at some point. I'll take a picture. The tires are in bad shape. I mean it still has PLENTY of tred but the back tire you can't see won't hold air and the valve stem is rusted out. When I try to fill it with air it squirts out some kind of clear liquid and it goes flat. Can I put a tube in there? Thanks guys, I'm super excited about the tractor!!

I have a few more questions maybe you guys can help me out with. So the 1710 came in two different transmission versions. I think mine is the synchro-mesh because it has the 4 gears on bottom and steering stem shifter. Is this the better version? Do I need to come to a complete stop to go from F to R? How about shifting gears whats the best way when using the FEL?

Good deal on a good rig! Order yourself at least an owners manual the minute you hand over the cash.

The Synchromesh is, in my opinion, the better transmission. It has the range selector on the hump and the shuttle shift on the column.

The stick on the bottom is your range selector. The tractor needs to come to a complete stop to change ranges. Depress your clutch pedal fully, choose your range, then use the shuttle.

The stick on the column is the shuttle shift. It can be shifted while in full motion or stationary, provided the clutch is used.

With the loader you may want more traction. You may be able to get R1 tires to fit the 16" rims. My 1720 has the turf tires but no loader. It does good with the box blade and dirt scoop as long as the dirt is dry, but if it is wet, no traction.

What a great deal - jump on it! With turfs all around you may bea little light on traction. I have industrials on the front and turfs on the rear. It works as a great combination.

That liquid that shot out is likely calcium chloride it is very corrosive so make sure you rinse off all metal parts that it touched as soon as possible. Great deal anyway you slice it even with the issues snatch it up as fast as you can if you don't like it you'll find plenty of buyers.

So I found out a little more about the tractor. It was serviced 2 years ago to the tune of $1600. We couldn't find the invoice and the shop changed their computer software and lost the invoice too. So we're not exactly sure what was done but I'm guessing the oil/trans/hydraulic/fuel fluids and filters were changed. The tractor has set unused since the maintenance so my question is do I need to change the fluids again or can I run it?

Did it set outside or inside? If it was indoors I would do a quick check on the fluids and try running it. If it was outside I would be much more cautious and do a much more thorough fluids check before I ran it.

It was outside. So check all the fluids and it should be ok?

Check to see if they're milky. This would indicate water. If they're clear, I'd run it.

Hydraulic/transmission fluid should be fine, if it's not milky. Engine oil probably is too, but a filter and a few quarts of oil are cheap insurance. I would change the engine oil. JMHO

You can probably salvage the tires by draining the fluid, removing the tire from the rim, sandblast and repaint the rims, and then remount the tires with new tubes. If you don't have the money to blast and paint, you can just clean the rims up and cover the rust with duck tape. Don't laugh, it works. Just need something to prevent the tube from sticking to the rusty rim. That will cause future leaks.
If you need to load the tires again, look at RimGuard or something similar that's non-corrosive.
