That's a good idea about getting the quote in writing, CYA.

Good luck getting a "Hard number" on a quote. Most shops quote best case scenarios. If they get into your engine and don't have all the machining in the quote, they'll call you to tell you. When you try to tell them to stick to the quote, they'll just machine .010 over and put oversize pistons in if available. If they find anything else that is not covered under a standard rebuild, they'll hit you up for that too.

There is a big difference in discovering 'extra' damage that needs to be corrected, and quoting a rebuild with no boring/sleaving on a block that does not come from the factory sleaved. I.E. the block comes and runs in the 'parent' bore from the factory, and there is a sleave kit sold that you bore it for to bring it back in oem. I.E... a rebuild that has loose cyl tolerances should include boring and sleaving.. that # should at least be mentioned on the quote..if it isn't.. then the jobber or machinist didn't bother to take 10 seconds and look up that engine in the aprts manual like I just did... There is no magic involved in this kind of work.. it's all on paper, not counting hidden damage...

Could anyone recommend a good resource for R&R and engine rebuild info. I've seen 900 page Service/Repair Manuals (CD) on eBay for $10. You never know what these manuals cover until you get one and I don't want to waist time and money trying to find the right manaul.

A lot of folks swear by I&T Manuals. Personally, I wouldn't have one of their books, but that's me. (I've found erroneous info and/or missing valuable info on too many occasions when I did use them) I've always favored manuals for the manufacturer. (in your case FORD) They pop up on ebay all the time. I've got a 3000. I have the "owners manual", "parts manual", and "service manuals". I've found the parts manual to be AT LEAST as important as any service manuals over the long haul.

I agree about the parts manual, the exploded diagrams in the ford MPC's are -very- usefull.

Escorts, who builds Farmtrac, used to build Ford tractors for the Indian market. When Fiat bought Ford New Holland, they sold the plant, along with the engine castings, to Escorts. These tractors are similar to the Ford tractors formerly sold here, but not exactly. The engine blocks and internals are the 175, 192, and 201 c.i.d. 3 cyl. diesels used in the 2x00 thru 4x00 Ford series. The rear axles are based off the Ford 3600 rears, the rest of the tractor is Escorts, except the sheet metal of course. Fuel delivery and steering also are Indian. The larger tractors, such as the one you refer to with the Perkins, share only sheet metal with the Fords.
Long and Longtrac machines were manufactured by Universal (UTB), and are no longer imported by Farmtrac, as Escorts owns a majority of the former Long Corp. Montana is importing a few models of the UTB now.

This is what the Farmtrac website said:

Farmtrac now offers replacement engines for most of the Ford
3000 and 4000 Series tractors originally equipped with 175,
192, or 201 cubic inch engines. If you own an older Ford tractor
that is in need of a complete engine overhaul, contact your
local Farmtrac dealer to learn more about our new, emission-
compliant replacement engines.

For just a little more than the cost of an overhaul on your
current engine, and for much less than replacing with an engine
purchased from New Holland, the Farmtrac Engine Kit features
the SAME reliable engine that comes on new Farmtrac tractors
today and that had been factory installed in the past on new
Ford tractors. Engine kit includes new fuel injection equipment,
water pump, fan belt pulley, starter and alternator.

=================================================

So the engines are basically clones? If I walked into a NH dealer or another place and asked for a part for a Ford 3X00 (which would be the same sized engine), it would work?!

Man, I wish I knew that when I was replacing my grape harvester motor.....

They are not actually clones, they are manufactured using all of the Ford castings acquired by Escorts when NH sold the Ford facility to Escorts. Escorts had built the Ford tractor under contract to Ford for the Indian and Asian markets.
