hmm.. I've never put a clutch in a 3000.. though FWJ may have.

I can tell you though.. than on a ford N, the splinded hub IS offset with one side longer than the other.. and for a N.. the long side goes toward the tranny.

I've had some hands on with later 3 cyl 2000's and some of the 4000+ units.. but very little on the 3000 other than 'play' I knew they had some weird trans options, but was unaware of the early 8spd being able to had as a dual clutch setup.. vs the 8spd on the 4000 and up which are independent in allt he ones I've messed with.

I assume his model code number will end with the digits "3C" then for a live , non independent 540 trans and 8spd.. etc.

No need to dig the literature up.. I believe ya.. as I said.. I have'nt done more than play on a 3000, and past that, have only had minor work "with" the 2-3-4 3 cyl models.. Vs work "on" them...

Well, I found 'em anyway. The literature I have has a copywrite date of 1972. It list's 3000 tranny/pto options as 8-speed/2-stage clutch as standard, 8-speed/independent pto as 1st option, and Selectospeed/ind. pto as final option.

In spite of the less than stellar reputation of the misunderstood tranny, I'd like to have a diesel 3000 w/ Selectospeed.

Same on the 3000. My son was once a teen ager. My 3000 got a couple clutch's. :(

From what i see.. the SOS that are maintained well seem to last well. Clean proper oil seems to be the biggest factor on their lifespan.

Must be a ford thing on the offset clutch hub going the same way. it's nice to see some continuity among the similar lines..

The last day before I left for basic training in 1966, my moms brother bought a new 2000 SOS. It didn't last as long as my Army carreer. A guy down the road from where I live now has a 1967 4000 that's in mint condition. He's owned it since new.

My uncle could break half a brick with a feather.

My neighbor could drive a #16 nail with an egg.

Some people didn't need to sit on an SOS tractor.

Others were born to run them.

No doubt there's tricks to making them hold up, but I think 99.9% of the "trick" is keeping certain folks away from them.

Yep.. I know people that could break an anvil.. they are just anti-machine.

The very first run of the SOS that came out in 1959 were documented to be buggy.. and there were field fixes issued.. lots red trans got swapped for blue trans by the time the early 60's hit.

After that the second generation sos was actually pretty robust if maintained... like your neighbor did!

I checked with the clucth company as well as my engine builder and they both said that the flat side of the clutch goes towards the flywheel. I hope that is correct since I stabbed the motor last night.

Well, let's put it this way. If it's wrong, you've got a total of 4 of us to blame it on;)

(Raised part does in fact go towards tranny. I cheated and looked in the service manual)

hard to beat service like this... maybee a tad slow.. but darn accurate...

Reminds me of a saying i heard.. something about the millston of the gods... it ground very slow.. but exceedingly fine.. (wink)
