I finally got my rebuilt engine back. We had to put a sleeve in one cylinder. My question now is, since the builder did not have a clutch pilot tool, he left it loose so I could adjust while installing. I tried to install the engine but it would not slide onto the trans shaft. I borrowed a clutch pilot today from my local NH dealer. What is involved in aligning the clutches? Any tips on stabbing the motor.

Yer tranny input shaft should have worked for ya.. but ya got the tool now.

If this were a manual trans/pto tractor like an 8n you could put a pipe wrench on the pto and slip in neutral on trans, and in pto gear and turnt he pto to roll the trans input shaft over to get the splines to mate up.

What trans/pto setup does your tractor have? if independent.. this setup won't work.. if trans pto.. it will work..

My tractor has the 8 speed manual with live PTO.

make sure the center input shaft has not dropped a bit due to a little bearing movement etc. if it has it make it a real bear to put together. sometimes a piece of paper in there as a temporary shim is all it takes. the paper (only a little bit) gets chewed up on start up. turning the pto will help (as mentioned depending on type of pto). also turning the motor can help line up the splines. get about 4 real long boltswith the same thread as the bell housing bolts and cut the heads off them. then cut a slot in them to make a big screw. now screw them into the tran/motor as line up bolts. this makes it really easy to see if its all square. have fun because some times they go amazingly easy. and sometimes it takes half a day and thats at a dealership workshop. you have been warned.

Hmm.. I was under the impression that the 8spd only came with independent pto option..

Is your mdel ID something like:
C10?3C

or

C10?4C

If it is independent pto.. it will have a pto break ( except on 10spd sos models.. which you don't have ). Witht he pto break.. you can't spin the pto to help align the clutch.. bummer..

The dowel / guide rod ide will be usefull though..

Soundguy, my catalog says that the 10 speed comes with Independent PTO and the 8 speed comes with Live PTO. ????

I have another concern first, I picked up a clutch locating tool from a local NH dealer. I tried to insert it into the clutch assembly tonight and it did not fit. Either I have the wrong tool or I received the wrong clutch. I had tried to get my clutch rebuilt as I like to go back with the original equipment when ever possible. My engine builder called the clutch builder about his work, stating the plate had not been faced. The clutch builder picked up the assembly and gave me a new one. I have no part number to know exactly what it is.

I am hoping that someone will know if the tool number that I am using is correct for the 3000 diesel. Tool # NU1262. It looks like it should fit but it will not make it through the first stage.

Can't help you with the tool as I usually use the input shaft as an alignment tool.

As for the 8speed.. it is independent... ( which is live.. defacto )

Both my 1975 ford 5000 and my 2002 NH 7610s use virtually the same design of fords good trusty old crashbox 8speed.. and both have the independent pto.. just slip it in whenever.. no need to clutch as it is hyd activated.. etc..

OK. The dealer gave me the wrong tool. I've got the right one now but I'm not sure about the top clutch pad. Which way is up? The clutch pad has a small rise at the center hole on one side (about 1/2"). Does this rise go towards the clutch assembly or towards the transmission? Or does it make any diiference?

Chris, Both the 1973 3000 Gasser I used to own and the 1971 3000 diesel I currently own are 8-speed w/ live power (2-stage clutch, not independent pto) I believe that combo was standard on 3000's 1970 and later. I still have most of the Ford literature from when I bought the '73 model new. I'll dig around and see if that's the case.

Could be.. The 3000 was a departure from the 600/800 early 2000/4000 tractors and the 4 cyl design.

I've had some hands on with later 3 cyl 2000's and some of the 4000+ units.. but very little on the 3000 other than 'play' I knew they had some weird trans options, but was unaware of the early 8spd being able to had as a dual clutch setup.. vs the 8spd on the 4000 and up which are independent in allt he ones I've messed with.

I assume his model code number will end with the digits "3C" then for a live , non independent 540 trans and 8spd.. etc.

No need to dig the literature up.. I believe ya.. as I said.. I have'nt done more than play on a 3000, and past that, have only had minor work "with" the 2-3-4 3 cyl models.. Vs work "on" them...
