The thing that made/makes it a 231 rather than anything else was that it should have a shorter spindle. From your profile picture, that looks to be true.

The guy I bought it from seemed to me to be some sort of amateur tractor jockey. He did mention that he purchased the tractor from a municipal golf course and "restored it" . . . which I took to mean "overhauled with a paint brush" . . . maybe he swapped the motor, or maybe the golf course mechanics did it.

What you're saying related to "turf tractor" makes sense with what little I know about the history of this unit.

Well, if it came from a golf course, it probably was abused or little maintenance was performed on it and engine work needed.
Nice looking whatever way you look at it. Knowing it is a 231 is helpful if you ever have to replace an axle half or spindle, but beyond that, it really is a high horsepower, low profile tractor!

I purchased a Zenith 13914 carb, which was supposed to be for the 3600. The new carb starts easily, but dies when I try throttle up. I purchase a new carb (rather than rebuild the existing one) because the old carb was a Zenith 13912, which would seem like the carb for the 4000 series. I assumed the previous owner had just slapped on the wrong carb. The old carb appeared to be leaking fuel as well running rich, as my flail mower is covered with soot,

The serial number on the engine block appears to be D455780.
Doesn't the gas version have a vacuum advance?

If it does I would make sure the points plate is rotating and the diaphragm is good.

When accelerating the RPM's advance is needed.

Just something to check and not saying this is the problem -but it could contribute to falling on it's face when the throttle is advanced regardless of jetting of course if the engine only uses mechanical advance I would still check to confirm the weights are free and the advance works.

The distributor has a vacuum advance, however it's not hocked up. The plate seems free and the weights seem like they were doing their job. My plan was to reconnect the vacuum advance, however I would love it if someone could post a photo of where on the carb / manifold it's supposed to connect to . . .
