That explains the volvo but how does it explain the larger premums for liability on my little old light tin can tracker versus the big 2500 hd silverado. I can pretty much guarantee the 6000 pounds of silverado will do a lot more damage to another vehicle in a wreck compared to what the 1500 pounds of tracker can do. Actually the tracker liability is more than my porsche. So let me some that up. a vehicle which will do about 90mph top end and weighs about 1500 pounds.Cost more money for liability insurance than a vehicle that will do about 160mph top end or a vehicle that weighs 6000 pounds. I am beyond trying to reason what insurance companies base their rates upon.

Heh heh... My F250SD XLT crew cab diesel, jacked up is less than all three of my other vehicles. It is less than my Chevy S-10 2-seat gasser 4 banger. Hah!

Go figure.

I actually prefer Cummins 5.9L diesels to the competiton, but more based on simplicity & reliability, so don't make the me the "anti-cummuns" guy.

I'm sorry but i do'nt know how you came to that conclusion .

In regard to Mack and Cat V8's , from memory they have pretty big strokes also .

As i said before , stroke makes Torque (and that was all i was saying). It just happens that Cummins make a 6 cylinder that Dodge uses in their pickup that i was simply using as an example . As for a V8 producing the same torque as a 6 , that can be quite true but your having to feed 2 more cylinders to achieve this .

Actually my NEW insurance agent turned me on to how to save costs on my truck. My OLD insurance agent was not offering any better deals.

It is advisable to listen to more than one agent and offerings.

In general you are correct. In specifics you are merely close.

More stroke makes more torque at a lower rpm when compared to an engine of identical displacement. That is true. Also, HD truck engines like long strokes as they turn lower rpms and engine wear is determined by the total rotation count. Same power at lower rpm = longer engine life. They also like engines with fewer and slower moving parts as they have intrinsically higher reliability. That equals longer engine life and lower operational costs with less down time.

Also, in race engines, higher HP at higher rpm will win against higher torque at lower rpm when geared correctly. That is a fact as it is HP that does work, not torque. Work is force thru a distance (as in moving a vehicle someplace like down the track and across the finish line).

It is not the size of the connecting rod, it is how you use it .

We're cool. I just wanted to reassure you that my first preference is Cummins 6 cyl, but this V-8 DMAX is a HECK of a diesel engine. Very potent.

I found a link for an unbiased test of Ford, Chevy and Dodge diesels that should settle everything. It is a few years old, but I believe it still applies. Yeah, I drive a Dodge.
