This has always been a one line alternator. Yes, its funny because this alternator has always been hooked up and never had a problem. But when I tried to hook up the pos lead to bat it sparked big time. So I started unhooking load lines one by one and found the wire going out to the alt. was loading it down. So I wanted to know if it was the wire or the alt. Therefore, I disconnected the alt at the alternator and it did not load. Not the wire. I did pressure wash the tractor a little and thought maybe some water got inside. Unknown at this point.

i doubt water would do it.

double check you hooked up bat polarity correctly.

Wire runs from solenoid positive to ammeter (bat +) and from ammeter I to alternator. verified Basically the alternator is sending current to the battery via the ammeter. This is on a 3 post solenoid.

Say, on the diesel fuel tank. Do happen to know what size plug fits the leak outlet. I tried to measure it and a 5/8"-18 tap fit the hole but was sloppy. Is it a pipe thread?

did you mean 5/8 - 11?

OK if found the plug. A 5/8 tap will fit in the hole but it is actually a 3/8 pipe. Pipe threads are measured differently than SAE. So this problem solved. I have also removed the sending unit and removed all the float parts broken in the bottom.
I'm not used to dealing with diesel. What would clean out this tank so it would be fit to run gas? If anything. There is a lot of gunk in the bottom. I can't believe they charge so much for diesel with all the stuff in it. Or maybe that is why it is so expensive these days. Gives new meaning to the word "additives".

Does anyone believe you can run a 12 volt diesel float in gasoline and have it survive?

Thanks for all the help

i'm not following.. 12v diesel float?

I'd clean the tank with a lil acetone.. .. should be good after that...

This tank was used on both the gas and the diesel units. Just one part # for the tank. If you got a gas unit the dealer plugged the leak hole and installed a gas float sending unit instead of the diesel.
My understanding from Ford is the gas setup was 6 volts and the diesel used 12 volts.

Now that I've converted over to 12 volts its seems reasonable that I would now use a diesel sending unit at 12 volts, not the original 6 volt setup. So the question is I guess, "Can I use gasoline with the diesel sending unit. The floats are probably the same dimension, but probably made from different material so the fuel did not attack them. However the one I got out of this tank was mutilated beyond belief. Hopefully gas won't attack the diesel float material. Need a higher power who is familiar with using both gas and diesel fuel. I'm really not knowledgeable on diesel.

Hope this explains the situation a little better.

can't help you with the sending units.

maybee rickb or whodat.

I'd -guess- it will be fine.. I bet you it's the same flaot on both units... but let someone else say that.

all my tractors have a stick in the tool box to measure gas level.. :)

:laughing:Yep, I'm a stick man myself. But I'm getting older and I'm getting tired of walking. I always run out of gas at the other end of the property. Just thought I'd try to stop the practice and ride home. :dance1:

I received the alternator light housing that fits in the dash panel late today. No lamp with it just the bezel. What lamp goes inside the bezel and how does it attach to it? What I got looks like a sewing thimble.

Soundguy, on your tractors do you have the main light switch on the right fender point toward you and then the work light light switch on the same side but down on the cowling (for lack of a better term). on the piece between the fender and the tractor body. Both I believe are push/pull. Or can you explain what these holes accept.

Thanks again for your continued support. I'm putting all you guys helping me in for the golden tractor award !!!
