I agree ,Painting has never helped a engines compression.

That was one reason I started this thread; as part of my concern is a problem tractor that has been 'painted over'. I'm well aware of how people try to hide active leaks, deferred maintenance, etc. pre-conditioning too is a problem so I like to show up unannounced as opposed to calling ahead. This way I get to see the tractor started up 'cold', and not having been started earlier that day which could mask some problems. I you look close enough you can see the difference between a restoration paint job and one meant to make the machine look good. The results of a power washer and some spray bombs can be identified. I've seen these tactics used on cars, pickups and trailers too for that matter.

I have no immediate need just looking so I can afford to wait and find what I want. Power steering would certainly be a plus so might have to move up a few years to the 1960s as has been suggested.

But sometimes I guy does rebuild it correctly and a little cleanup and paint is the right thing to do.

It depends on who has the tractor and the length of ownership. I would be more worried about the tractor jockey who buys to resell with a spray job more than a long time owner

I am rebuilding my mf35 Deluxe to sell because it had a problem that preventing me from selling it. Pictures of before and after will be available along with parts and machine costs. price will depend on money invested. I will not lose money because I dont have to sell it, but the right person will come along and want/need a rebuilt tractor to use not parade show.

Personally, I don't trust tractors or other machinery with "new paint" unless I have proof that it was properly restored inside and out by someone who knows what they are doing because there are too many botched rattle can restorations out there.

Think about it, Joe Blow gets out the pressure washer to clean off the accumulated gunk, then slaps on some "new paint" so he can jack up the price. No thanks.

quite easy to spot a rattle can job.. or an auction paint job, fortunately.. :)

I agree that it's generally pretty easy to spot a poor "restoration", if one knows what to look for.

OK, in my travels this morning I spied a '63 Ford 4000.

Asking price is $4500 which I think is high.

There's a little wobble in the water pump bearing so that needs replacing and the front tires are shot. It's been cleaned up and repainted. Since it it only shows 580 hours on the meter (if you can believe that) for a 50 YO tractor as thats only averages out to ~11 hr/year. So most likely the meter is wrong or was replaced some time ago.

If my secret decoder ring is working then this is a 63 Utility type with 172cid gas engine and 5sp trans with live PTO.

The block casting number is CONN 6015 J which appears to be correct for the tractor model year.

this was all decrypted using the information at:
http://www.oldfordtractors.com/idhistory.htm

The tractor I saw today is every bit as clean looking
as the one that appears on the web page above.

I'm thinking that $3000 to $3500 is a more reasonable price range, and keep in mind that prices run a bit higher in the NE than elsewhere from what I have seen on most everything, even used 50 YO tractors. :)

Find a Ford 600 ... I had one til it got stolen. It was a great tractor, had to change the antique carb but then it ran like new.

Isn't a 4000 series an updated 800 series machine?

Yes, it was something i spied in my travels this last week. Drove by again today and saw there is no mower, but it does have a 5' disc which i don't really need. I think it is out of the picture after seeing what else i can get for under $2k.

To bad your in jersey. I have a cub low boy for sale in Connecticut. Runs great and have a mower deck with it. Just reprinted two years ago, fall 2010. Has new clutch good hydro.
