Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

Autozone was just about the same price. They did not have any in stock. Here's the remnants of my spark plug/cylinder head job. What you see are broken intake bolts, remnants of the spark plugs, cutoff exhaust bolts, rotted head bolts and numerous other rotted parts including a piece of my old valve cover. The surgery was a success and she runs like a dream once again. It did however take me quite a lot of time to figure out what the heck an "Inline Spout" was. You need to unplug this in order to set the timing. Thanks to Google, I found out what the heck it was.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

Thats a shame it took so much, wonder if a WD40 coating would help or just burn off...The spout in place allows the computer to adjust the timing, fighting your adjustments. With it removed, you can set the timing accuratly.. But I guess you figured that out already. Glad to hear its up and runnig again, hope you have better luck.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

I'm going to spray the whole underside of this truck with oil. I don't know if WD40 would help. I know for a fact that oil does. I know a guy that has a 1976 Ford F250 4x4 plow truck that is still in pretty nice condition overall. The previous owner use to oil the truck down once a year. I bought this truck for a get me by till I could afford a deisel. It may have to stay a little longer until I can get some payback for all the money I put into it.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

The truck runs just like new again. I towed my 22' boat down to the lake today for its christining. Good thing I didn't take it out sooner or I would have been up the creek with blown spark plugs towing 5k behind me. It must have been an Omen that the title for the boat had not come in before saturday and the boat got left behind at home when we went to the Cape last week for vacation. The water was nice today and the boat performed pretty good. I need to unstick the rear barrels of the Quadrajet. I couldn't get them to open up at full throttle. Oh well, that can wait till tomorrow. It was just so nice to get done with the truck and to relax on the water for a few hours goofing off.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

The Quadrajet has a lock out on the secondaries until the engine reaches operating temperature. Check this lock out mechanism first. Many times it is not set properly.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

I'll check that out tomorrow. usually I find that the piston gets gummed up on the secondaries from sitting. This boat hasn't hit the water in over 2 years from what I was told.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

Just a question but did the prior owner spray the engine in salt water once a week or something? Maybe a acid bath? Perhaps he stored it in a state salt pile.

I have run 3 Ford pickups since 88, 2 years/44000 on the first then got hit by a tractor trailer, 8 years/198000 on the second (got tired of the color), and 7 years/50K and counting on this one (changed jobs /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. ) None were 100% garage kept. The second lived inn a garage for a year. The third has had a inside home for about 1.5 years.

I have run GM, Dodge, Triumph, International, and White stuff before and currently. I have not seen anything like that corrosion on a motor that has been taken care of.

I guess if he never washed it off after the winter calcium season it could get like that. I'm thinking that is a lot more human error more than metalurgy.

Glad to hear its up and running.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

Here are my thoughts on all the rust on the motor. It is definitely from road salt. I doubt the motor was ever washed off. I believe the motor has been changed due to the lack of wear in the cylinders with the mileage the truck has. New long block motors from the factory do not come painted. Only the rebuilts have paint on them. The motor in my truck is paint free except for the oil pan and valve covers. Unpainted surfaces tend to rust pretty quickly when you add salt and water to the metal. The frame on the other hand is in real good condition. The underside of the bed is in excellent condition.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

Check the engine block number. If it were original it usually has a stamping that corresponds to the VIN. If a replacement, then it has a different type of number.

Re: Ford Pickup = \"Found On Road Dead\"

I'd be lucky to find any number under the rust. Where do they hide it on a Ford? I could barely find the timing marks on the damper. I had to sand it down from underneath with the motor running to clean it up, it was that bad.
