Ford Trucks to Get 62 MPG?

Really sounds like you should get out and about a little more often.

Just reporting the facts...I'd love a 50MPG pickup, but huge sacrifices will have to be made until technology catches up.

The first manufacturer to actually pull it off will corner the market...And let's be honest, they are trying really hard now.

I want no parts of Europe style living..No parts whatsoever.. I know many from there, and if they have any work ethic left, they feel the same way. That's why they came here and don't want to move back....I have to understand this stuff as part of my living, so this is not opinion only.

None of the big Three will build a auto, that can or will lug the engine with tall gearing. It would spell disaster for them. I had hoped for a CVT that had an overdrive, hence improved fuel mileage. This would be strictly for carrying two passengers and a extra payload of aprox. 100 lbs?..Saturn did make a sedan, that was set up like this apparently there was not enough R&d into it to stay.IMHO, fuel injection has really pushed the ratings up, on most engines..

Subaru makes a CVT transmission but I don't think it really sees much of a difference in fuel economy.

Most of the problems deal with American saftey standards and emissions standards. Neither of which the beer can cars in Europe can meet.

The NHTSA tests havent changed in YEARS. Other than implementing a modified version of the Euro side impact test... Which in my opinion is an easier test to pass than the original European one. (angular side impact , US test vs. 90* side impact , Euro)

NHTSA doesnt do an offset frontal impact. Euro does. This is typical of a head on collision where an inattentive driver crosses the centreline. MUCH harder to build a car to withstand this than the full frontal that NHTSA does. And the Eruo full frontal is done at a higher speed.

Plus things like pedestrian safety tests in the eurpean model make it superior.

NHTSA tests are easier to pass for the less sophisticated vehicles coming from the big 3 versus the NCAP tests. Thats why they never change ... Thats also why theyre not a better test of vehicle safety in the real world at least in its current iteration. Matter of fact, current NHTSA tests are so outdated that they intend on updating them to reflect the Euro ones and may even go beyond it. BUT the big 3 are kicking and screaming to try and prevent it.


On the Smart, yes its not intended for interstates. Its an Inner City commuter car.

Mazda's mileage push sounds interesting. It seems like there are more mfgs finally marketing 40mpg cars.

Ford also have quite a few. My sister had a Ford with one. Can not remember the name of the car but it was a wagon type/mini van/suv mix made in the mid 2000's.

Saw one on the TCH today near Halifax. First one ive seen in the flesh. Wasnt crazy over the colour, but theyre a nice looking car.

Thanks but I'll stick with my American pickups and the wife's Hummer. $4.00 gas didn't change my life anymore than $7.00 gas will. I don't like paying more for gas, but I'll make do.

Just towed a car trailer load back from the sportsmans club with my 400+ HP GMC and didn't even know the trailer was back there and the truck gets 20MPG on the highway....Try that with one of those EuroPeon beer cans...

Pedestrian safety?...Simple solution, try not to run over pedX'rs. I've been driving to the city for 20+ years in pickup trucks and haven't hit anyone yet. Would think that a Fiat would hurt pretty bad if I got hit on foot with one of those too.

I've seen a few of those Fix-It-Again-Tony's on the road here, and sat in one at the car show. I wasn't too impressed by it.
