Found this while mowing

I thought for sure this thread was going to have a picture of an engine block with chunks out of where a bush hog "found" it. <disappointed>

^^ Yeah, I was holding back about 'finding stuff while mowing' ending up with a bent blade, shaft or busted something or other.

Here's a pic of me pulling an older version of a similar rake. Summer of 1959. 8 years old. Driving an 8N Ford tractor with homemade cab. Those were the days.

Another weekend and another item.

Might be a little hard to see, but it is an old manure spreader. Going to have to eventually drag it out, but for now it is out of the way.

That one is going to need some chainsaw work. Take some more pictures first though, some people will pay more for a picture of the tree growing through the machine than anybody would for the implement in working condition.

Interesting finds, it's always fun to look at the old things. They may be outdated now but there was a lot of hay put up with what you're rediscovering.

My dad had several old things stuck in the woods. But when scrap prices were high, he sold them..

There was a lot of stuff going for scrap back then which probably had more value as something else. One day I followed a pickup laden with old horse drawn implements until he pulled into his driveway... I was going to offer him what he would get at the yard but it turns out he was a collector. I was glad to hear that as I don't know what I would have done with it after I bought it. :D

I have an old IH rake similar to that as a back up. That one may be new enough, that like my IH rake, will also ted hay, flipping the lever to engage the drive, in another notch, 180º opposite in the raking position.

If you have any Amish in the area, they maybe interested in that horse drawn mower, if you have no use for it. A lot of people looking for them also for yard art.

That manure spreader doesn't look to be in that bad of shape, unless there is something I can't see. Most, the sheet metal will rust out in the beater area. More than likely, the apron chain is broken. Lots of people out there looking for fix'er upper stuff like that. Been there myself..!!

I had an Amish guy buy the one just like it for $350ish this spring.

Working at the farm again today, another item found as we cleared more.

Resized_20190902_102110.jpeg
If you look in the brush, you can see what we found today

Here is a better picture, a 4 bottom plow that we pulled out from the brush.

Unreal. The last post I read was of somebody lamenting that he couldn't find a reasonably priced plow.

According to my dad, we should have another 4-bottom plow somewhere and there should be two 2-bottom plows somewhere. According to dad in the late 40s early 50s grandpa bought a bunch of equipment when he got back from WWII. We just don't know where he has hidden it all. It may be back the 15 acres where there is a couple sheds back there, but we haven't gotten back there yet. We are just working on the 5 acres around the house right now.

Here is an old wagon, I didn't include it in the initial post because we haven't gotten it dug/cut out yet.

AS we continued clearing, we came across two more implements.

Here is an old hammer mill that has a tree growing around it.

Here is an old planter that has trees growing all over it.

With some chainsaw work, we were able to free the hammer mill.

We ran out of time to get the planter free, so that will wait for another day.

This thread is a lot of fun. On old farms around here I see a lot of equipment like that just sitting and letting nature overtake it. **** shame really.

We are getting stuff moved together and then we will see what can be salvaged, what someone might want for a yard decoration and what will go to the scrap dealer. What amazes me is how dad can remember when grandpa purchased a particular piece of equipment and usually has a story to go with it. Find stuff is fun, hear the stories and sharing the time with dad, priceless.

Here are two items we worked on unburying today. We got the old four bottom plow out (this is the second one of these we have come across), but the old disc we didn't get free yet.

It was two trees and one bush further down from the old planter, which we haven't gotten that completely out either.

We did more cleaning and here are some implements we found in the back pasture (15 acres on the back side of the farm). The hay rack, we found buried along the fence line, which it took both tractors to get it out.

Both my grandparents suffered from dementia in the later years. My grandma started 'strategically' placing things before we got her moved in with my parents. Now we are having the fun adventure of re-discovering the lost equipment.

If you have the patience for it, you might be surprised how many dollars of stuff you are uncovering. People will buy anything.

I'm a smalls guy. I'd be looking at the things hanging on the walls, stuffed in buckets, etc. That's where my treasures are.

ovrszd is absolutely correct on this. When we cleared my FIL place we had several examples of what most would consider garbage that we sold on eBay for real money. One instance was a one quart oil can my FIL had used to feed his horses for years. It had the top cut out and the top opening was bent in an oblong shape from dipping shelled corn and pouring it. I picked it up and started to toss it in the trash then decided to keep it for resale. I bent the top back to where it was pretty much round took good photos and put it on eBay. To my surprise it ended up selling for $42.00 plus shipping. Another example was a small tin bank that was somewhat rusty but unique and it brought over $1,200.00.

One persons junk is another persons treasure.

My neighbor died of cancer few years ago. He loved to go to Farm sales. He'd carry home buckets and boxes of stuff.

After a couple years Karen asked me if I'd be interested in cleaning out his machine shed. I told her I'd do it and pay her $500. She balked at the money but I insisted. I kept track of my hours. Took 74 hours to clean it out. 90% absolute junk. Paper bags full of folded paper bags for example. Hand rolled rolls of rusty barbed wire.

I ended up with a lot of small hand tools, hammers, etc. Quite a few different sized chains. A couple large cables with loops in each end. I didn't sell anything. Kept everything worth keeping and/or gave stuff to friends and family.

Karen was elated to get it cleaned up. I ended up with some great memorabilia items of Steve's. Simple little things that are very valuable to me and remind me daily of him. I display them in my shop.

Here's my favorite. Life size John Wayne. I call it my shop security system. :)
