Well if anyone is interested I talked with the young lady that was bit today. She was at a birthday party for one of my granddaughters. At Chuckee Cheeses of all places. She is getting around well with a walker. Will take the walker and bump your leg three or four times to get you to move if you are in her way. Each bump gets a little harder than the last LOL. We were picking on her about her pimped out walker and may get her a horn for it. Played a game of skeeball or whatever with her and got beat. Very pretty and cheerful young lady.

Her knee is still immobilized and the wrapping goes from her ankle all the way up. The mother is worried about the therapy that starts in about a week. The medical people have told her that it will be very painful. The surgeon and staff are calling constantly to check on her.

She will eventually heal but the doctors have told the mother it will be a year or more if she ever fully recovers.

Not that I know of. Dog was supposed to be caged for a week or so then destroyed. It had a collar but no tag.

One other thing the mom told us.

Mother said the surgeon said he put "thousands" of stitches in the little girls leg!! Is this even possible? Told her he put more stitches in that nine year old's leg than he usually put in all his other patients in a year??? I think/hope he was exaggerating but the mother said the leg muscles were shredded.

He also told her the large artery in the leg was visible. If it had been opened she would have bled out in minutes.

Malley said the birthday party was the most fun she had since the attack. Score one for Chuckee Cheese and all the video games.

It's awesome that she's doing well -- a positive attitude goes a long way to recovering (and doing so more quickly).

My experience with loose dogs is the larger the dog,the less likely they wear a collar and/or chipped. The few weighing less than 20 pounds and not wearing a tag, were usually injured,infested by parasites or other signs of neglect pointing to abandonment. Point is that owners who alow large dogs to roam take precautions to make it difficult to prove ownership if the dog does something bad. Here's a familiar scenario. A person known to be a rancher,poultery farmer or having a situation where large dogs could cause damage,ask's a neighbor if he own's or know who own's a (large breed of certain color ect). Neighbor respond's with"ah,,umm,well,I've seen that old dog around several times,why,did it do something???" Or the farmer approach's neighbor with"I want to talk to you about your Doberman". In this case where farmer has connected the dog & owner,the owner's response "ah,uhh,,,,well that's not my dog,he's been hanging around for a while so I been giving him something to eat". I don't have a solution,not one that everyone agree's with and are ready to work on.

I alluded to that in post #7. Large,free roaming dogs rarely carry identification because owners realize they might cause trouble and don't want the responsibility.

My dog hasn't worn a collar since it caused a "hot spot" which quickly got infected. Also for safety reasons, as I don't need him hanging himself out in the woods. His tags are on my key ring, his license is in the glove compartment of my pickup. (Which actually does also contain a pair of gloves.)

He also is never willingly where he can't see me.

Jstpssng, same here my dog's tags are on my key ring . . . and exactly, he is a working dog and does not have any kind of collar, leash whatever . . .

The collar could be tested for DNA. With some detective work and help from 23&me a shortlist of possible owners might be found.

The parents don't seem to be interested as long as the animal is destroyed.

Parents are a farmer and a school teacher. They have chicken houses and are very familiar with animals of all kinds. The fierceness of the attack was a shock.

About a week before the attack we had seen and talked to the parents at the local Wal-Mart. I asked about the kids and they laughed and said they were grocery shopping and couldn't bring them. I thought that was strange. Later we saw them in the parking lot and understood why no kids were with them. Seats in the mini-van were folded down and every singe inch of the back was piled high with groceries. I believe there were four empty carts sitting around.

Did I mention that they have four children.
