In order to maintain rental houses and apartments, it was necessary that I enter and work in home's while resident was absent. One of my standard questions when setting up appointments was "do you have a pet inside house"and asking for it to be put in a bedroom. I lost count of times people told their dog would never harm me so they didn't need to confine it. In those cases,I told them I was't worried about myself,I am concerned the dog could be injured because I carry a pistol in my tool pouch in case of dog attack. They ALWAYS changed their mind and confined dog without farther discussion.
You are a lot more tolerant than a lot of landlords.
I have a Lab because they are less prone to be mean, and I've made every attempt to socialize him. He's the kind of dog which people will go out of their way to greet, including going out to my truck or asking me to him inside. Yet I've been told by friends that you don't want to try to get into my house when he's there alone.

Jstpssng, One off the items on a list(How to discourage thieves from targeting your house) was to have a Labrador.
It seems they are friendly by day and a serious guard dog at night when the owner is asleep.

Shepherds are smarter than a lot of people.. My male encountered a large porcupine for the first time the other day, he sniffed from 5 feet away and gave him a wide berth and watched him walk slowly away..
Mine steers clear of snakes, worms, and frogs. She was following a baby frog across the road and lost it in the grass. She stepped off into the grass and the frog was between her front legs. Frog jumped and she shot about 3ft straight up :laughing:

Worms give her the heebie geebies. :D Was out walking after a rain storm and she stepped on one. She picked her paw up shaking it and you could see a shudder go through her whole body. She stepped on another one and did the same thing. She then peed in the middle of the street and dragged me back to the house.

Her and crawfish is hilarious. She found one and it popped her in the nose. On the second trip down the street, she smacked it around some with her paw and then peed on it :laughing:

I have found that to be somewhat true. However, I usually need to wake him up (or pick up a gun) before he realizes anything is going on.
My main concern here is vermin of the 4 legged kind, the only two legged variety also has wings.

You need to start carrying a video camera. The episode of her and the crawfish would have been especially good footage.

I actually got a video of the first encounter. :D The second encounter happened so fast, that by the time I got my phone up to record, she was already peeing

Re: Friend痴 9-year old daughter in surgery after stray dog attack.

Thankfully my shepherd avoids snakes. The copper head was laying on the edge of the road after dark. I never used to carry a flash light with me when i walked, since the street lights give off enough light to navigate by. That night of the copper head, Gypsy steered me to the other side of the road, and walked me around it.. I didn't realize it was there till i looked back and saw it.. I learned two things that night..If she avoids an area, I need to avoid it as well. The second was to carry a flash light.:thumbsup:

I used to work with a guy who was a K9 handler in Vietnam. He used to say that one had to learn to read the dog, meaning understand what the dog was telling the dumb two legs.

One night he and the dog were walking a perimeter road around an air base. There was a fence between him and the jungle but it was just him and the dog. For some reason, a truck came down the road and the truck had it's headlights on. Since he did not want to get lit up by the headlights, he tried to drag the dog into a ditch but the dog did not want to go into the ditch. He insisted and dragged the dog into the ditch. They laid down in the ditch, and when the truck went by, he saw a cobra swinging three or so feet in the air next to them.:thumbdown::eek:

He never again failed to read his dog.:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

It wasn't that dramatic, but I was reading a biography of a Maine game warden K-9 handler who told of looking for a 5 YO toddler. The dog kept trying to go to the snowmobile parked behind the garage, and the warden would reprimand him and tell the dog to get to work. A few hours of searching was unsuccessful until the kid came wandering out from behind the garage to see what the excitement was about. He had fallen asleep on his father's snowmobile.

Gypsy is pretty easy for me to read for me anyway. My wife has some difficulty If there's something she perceives as a danger, she will step sideways in front of me and stop me. She has an avoidance pace as well if she doesn't want to go off the pavement into the grass. I figured that one out shining a flash light into the area she was really avoiding. There was a cotton mouth at the bottom of the ditch laying in the water.

Her ears telegraph a lot about her mood. Straight up rigid and pointing forward. Something caught her interest. And has her undivided attention. I pay most attention to that one.

If she's on baby sitting duty and entertaining the kids, 1 ear is always following a kid. If two kids, 1 ear follows each kid like independent satellites :D She takes this duty very seriously and ends with passed out kids and pooch

If she has the Dobby ears, you better watch out. Your are fixing to get attacked by the kissy monster with lots and lots of tongue

Thanks, that picture was her glamour shot taken by the trainer we took her to. She was a poster pooch for their website and face book page for a bit :D:D
