I let my shepherd lay down the law after holding him back several times from a mutt up the road.. I also carry a 40 while walking my dog up here in the woods.. Stray pitbulls, moose and bears around here..

Mines very social and really good with other dogs and people. But she is protective of me, and if another person or animal is agressive towards her or me, she will act accordingly. I've been carrying a 22 mag with rat shot on our walks. But our issue of late has been the slithering kind with a copper head encounter 1 night and a couple encounters with cotton mouths. All the neighbors on the street have given me permission to shoot on there properties if I encounter one.

I shot a stray several years ago. It was about starved to death, ribs sticking out. My kids were young and it wouldn’t go away. I was afraid of it. I still feel bad about it but the animal control is about useless. I’m pretty sure it was dumped out in the country.

Daughter visited the young lady last night. Was on morphine drip for pain. Daughter and the mother teach together and are best friends.

Still a lot of rehab to go.

If I lived around those kinds of snakes (which I will soon enough), I will take them out..

RSKY, progress is being made  . . . sounds like the young lady is a fighter, and from your post "was on morphine drip for pain" that this course of treatment has been stopped.

Thankfully my shepherd avoids snakes. The copper head was laying on the edge of the road after dark. I never used to carry a flash light with me when i walked, since the street lights give off enough light to navigate by. That night of the copper head, Gypsy steered me to the other side of the road, and walked me around it.. I didn't realize it was there till i looked back and saw it.. I learned two things that night..If she avoids an area, I need to avoid it as well. The second was to carry a flash light.:thumbsup:

Shepherds are smarter than a lot of people.. My male encountered a large porcupine for the first time the other day, he sniffed from 5 feet away and gave him a wide berth and watched him walk slowly away..

Glad to hear the recovery is going well. ...really glad in fact as I absolutely hate it when children are hurt by aggressive/feral animals.

While I hope it may never be of use: in my experience animals will usually let go if something is coming towards their eyes (and they see it coming) -- even more so than if it's going towards their throat.

For better or worse, I've had to break up a few fights between dogs that were just being antisocial towards each other and I've found that taking a swing at their face with a fist generally seems to work pretty well (even if it misses). Of course the real thing is to be ready when/if they decide turn to engage the owner of that fist.

Granted I'm not sure there are many animals that'd want to catch a coconut/cantaloupe-sized fist in their face/eyes ...as even a miss seems to take the fight out of most that I've encountered  In fact it's almost like they realize I really don't like senseless violence/aggression and generally won't tolerate it in my presence.......

So here's hoping she makes a full recovery, and doesn't come to fear all dogs .......and that the advice offered above is never needed for actual use.

Glad she is doing well. My ex Secretary's brother is a plastic surgeon; he said that a considerable part of his practice was re-attaching and reconstructing children's noses that have been bitten off by dogs. Her experience was bad enough, but I suppose it could have been worse.

In order to maintain rental houses and apartments, it was necessary that I enter and work in home's while resident was absent. One of my standard questions when setting up appointments was "do you have a pet inside house"and asking for it to be put in a bedroom. I lost count of times people told their dog would never harm me so they didn't need to confine it. In those cases,I told them I was't worried about myself,I am concerned the dog could be injured because I carry a pistol in my tool pouch in case of dog attack. They ALWAYS changed their mind and confined dog without farther discussion.
