Front End Loader on a 2WD Tractor?

Yup, and I never saw a use for an air ratchet in the shop either until we found that we could do 4X the work using one. Never had any use for one before. Couldn't take nearly as many customers in a day before either

Clearly you don't have 2wd "big tractors" with 12 yard buckets loading trucks all day either. What kind of "big tractors" you talking about that wouldn't improve FEL work with the front tires pulling? I only know of one kind; those running on tracks. ;)

Well they range from 85 to 130 hp. Try putting a 4wd in the hay field with a baler or rake behind it and you will c a 2wd is much more effective. Not only that with my 2wd i dont tear up the pasture that belongs to a customer and i can load hay alot quicker. As i said earlyer depending on what your doing with the tractor depends on if you need 2wd or 4wd. Just like you said i would rather have the 4wd doing what you do but the 2wd doing what i do.:)

Having a need for (or not having a need for) 4wd and arguing (or giving the impression) that 2wd is just as capable is totally different.

4wd (anything) is/are more capable than the equivalent 2wd. Please try and explain where I am wrong...

Someone in the thread made a good point, 4wd (most anything -- barring some exceptions) are 2wd with a flip of a switch/lever. Are you saying capability goes DOWN when you turn ON 4wd?

Again, nobody is putting down 2wd. I just can't quietly sit while I read some give the impression that 2wd is better than 4wd. If a guy wants to buy 2wd, all the power to him. Just don't say they can do more with 2wd or 4wd is bad.

Thats y i said it depends on what you are doing with the tractor. If your loading alot of rock or useing the bucket loading out of a pit all day long then yes a 4wd tractor is better for that. If your in a hay field baling hay all day long then a 2wd is better for that, you get a better turn radius and your not tearing up the land as you go,

I guess I am not "getting" the issue with the hay field. When I don't want to tear up ground, I take my tractor out of 4wd -- which effectively makes it a 2wd.

Is there some mythical/magical difference between a 2wd tractor AND THE SAME MODEL 4wd tractor in 2wd?

How on earth is less traction "more effective" than more traction?

Is there some turning radius issues with 2wd vs 4wd on some brands of tractors?

My main point from the beginning has been the 4 WD is more expensive to maintain when you are a real farmer. Everyone that has a 4WD tractor that has 3000+ hrs on it and have not been into the front axle with major problems, please raise their hand :) Ken Sweet

Added some.

Well, a 4wd tractor in 2wd shouldn't tear up the land any more than a 2wd tractor.

However the turning radius I guess is all that can be argued. I'm glad we got to this issue because I thought everyone was just being thick headed. I see that as a valid point (although I don't think it would be enough for me to buy a 2wd tractor).

Kubota's turning radius is VERY close between 4wd and 2wd. Does it vary a lot more with other brands? Is Kubota the only one with bevel gear front ends? That appears to make a difference in turning radius.

But it does. I know this from experience but am not sure how to explain it.

Well, it must either be different tires or different toe/camber/caster. Limited slip front diffs offer some resitance in turning... so that might contribute... but I wouldn't think it does much. Tires probably make the biggest difference. I have seen OLD 2wd tractors with the classic old front tires... but do the modern 2wd have those?

I feel bad for the OP. We have gotten WAY off topic.

I would get a FEL no matter what.

It does matter a 2wd tractor wil not tear up the ground as bad as a 4wd tractor will bcuz of the tires and yes a 2wd turn radius is alot sharper than a 4wd.

Don't get too mad at me... for a while we were posting back-and-forth without seeing our latest comments.

I noticed we have been responding to older comments!
