FUEL FILLING FIASCO

A question for those of you whose tractors fuel fill is on top of the tractors hood. My L-39 has this "new to me" set-up. With fuel @ $2.50 gallon, I hate spilling fuel down the hood & sides from a 5 gallon can.

I am wondering what you folks use to fuel, if you don't have access to a pump & nozzle.

I use a big funnel with a screen in it. With a yellow diesel 5 gallon can, that I know is clean inside I can hit the fill port with just the spout on the can.

I have a 30 gallon container that has a hand crank pump. Since getting it, I hardly get a drop of diesel on my hands. I know thats disappointing to some here not to have the smell of diesel fuel on their body but I enjoy not having it on me. I bought it from Northern tool as I recall. I use my ramps to roll it in and out of the truck. Refueling is no longer an issue.

One of the cool ideas I have come accross is from TBN. This person took his fuel tank and attached a hose to a pick up tube that extended almost to the bottom of the tank and then he added a valve stem like you would use in a truck tire. Now just put the tube in the tractor and add a little air preasure to the tank and out comes the fuel. When your almost done just release the air preasure from the tank and the flow stops.....

What a great thought and no pump to buy or handle to turn 10 rotations per gallon.

I also use five gallon cans of fuel with one of those funnels that excludes water. I set the fuel can on the loader brace and drop in one of those siphon pump gizmos that are sold for adding kerosene to heaters. It has a vacuum bulb that you pump up and a knob that you turn that stop the vacuum and the fuel flow. They have a fueling tube about three feet long. They are cheap and work great.

The tank is 5.8 gallons. I use two 2.5 gallon Blitz-style plastic jugs. Those aren't bad to hold over the inlet. That's enough for 10-12 tach hours.

A question on my fire insurance renewal was "any fuel stored onsite?" I answered no and since then, purchased fuel goes right into the tractor.

Battery operated kerosene pump for $14 is the cheap and easy way to fill the tank. Hardest part is lifting the 5 gallon can on top of the tractor. To solve that problem you could use a simple rope hoist to lift the can to the top of the tractor.

Harv did this web page to solve his problem, just another option.

Same problem on an L5030. I use the blitz can or the pump. Set can on loader arm, climb up tire, invert can. Using a regular 5 gal can results in Diesel over everything! A funnel to raise the inlet height would help though.

We also use the Factory Mutual System Approved Handy Industries 30 gallon diesel fuel system, it works excellent.

I used to use the big funnel and 2-1/2 or 5 gallon container method and still do on occasions. A couple of years ago I was having lower back problems and couldn't hold the fuel can high enough or long enough so I got the Hardy Industies 30 gallon fuel container from Northern Tool... expensive but excellent. You can suck/pump the fuel out of the 5 gallon container into the tank and then turn around and transfer it from the tank into the tractor without spilling a drop or you can pour the fuel into the Hardy container and pump it to the tractor. The two-way pump is hand crank but it moves the fuel at a decent rate.
