Fuel gelling?

How about "Seafoam" as an extra additive for moisture? I do use Power Service but I was reading a can of Seafoam and it brags about being a good diesel additive? Thumbs up or Thumbs down?

Thanks gents.

For gelling, my vote goes to Howes Dieseltreat.

I have a 300 gallon storage tank and I add Power service (white bottle) and BioKleen (biocide) at each fill. In the winter I add Howes Dieseltreat into the tractor when I fill it. I have never had a problem with the tractors even at -20F.

. . . Today was the first time I've experienced filter gelling. It's been cold this fall, but it really took a hit last night.

. . . I needed to use the tractor late this afternoon -- when it was +7 degrees F.

I pulled the fuel filter, and it looked like a morel mushroom dipped in red paraffin. I don't figure there was any water in my tank. This filter has less than 10 hours on it, and I drained several ounces out of the tank before replacing the filter.

My filter appeared to again be completely gelled.

I believe this is my first year with ULSD.

Has anybody else recently experienced this? I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm guessing it is the ULSD.

Well, it turns out that my problem was not true gelling. It warmed up enough today for me to pull the fuel filter and bowl. I obviously got some fuel that had issues. As I mentioned above, I drained several ounces out of the fuel tank when I replaced the fuel filter about 10 engine hours ago.

I filled the tank last weekend with fuel I bought back in October.

When I pulled it today, my bowl was half full of water and black crud. The filter was again jammed with a mix of what I assume was frozen water and diesel. I didn't have a new filter, so I cleaned and flushed the filter I had. I drained several ounces out of the tank into a can, but didn't see any water -- however I did put in a fair amount of additive yesterday.

Anyway, after doing that, the tractor fired right up and ran perfectly.

I was just out in DC last week, and it seems to me that 7 degrees is mighty cold for your area..

Lunk -- I'm a little more than a 100 miles west of DC at about 1300 feet. We are always at least 10 degrees cooler than DC, and usually closer to 20 degrees cooler. It will get -10 to -15 a few times most every winter.

We only have 1 fuel around here.

Same here. Even our off-road diesel switched to ULSD sometime in the last year or so.

For my home tank for the tractors I put in maybe 75
gal of #2 and 125 gallons of #1 with two large bottles
of Power Service.

On my PU I start adding extra PS in September then
do a filter change. I run extra #1 in the winter, I've got
a station for the road Deisel that you can get #1, #2 or
his mix, I'll pump a mix in, but yesterday I topped the
tank off with 15 gallon of #1 with 8 oz of PS. I know
a lot of guys who try and run #2 and usually they do
ok until we hit a real cold spell. I'll take a hit on MPG
in the winter to know I can keep going.

Hope this helps on the fuel. On that black stuff in your
fuel sounds like you have a fungus growing.

I cut my own diesel fuel. I usually add two gallons keroscene to 4 gallons of diesel to fill my compact tractor. Also add power service. Live in northern NY and already have seen temps -15 below zero. Cheap insurance. Been a diesel mechanic over twenty years. Done more roadside gell ups then I care to remember. Refuse to let my own tractor gell up. Its a easy way to convert your summer fuel to winter fuel.

No issues here with any fuel. I do not use PS due to UOA reasons.
