I am designing my detached 4-car garage. What I have so far is it will be 46 feet wide by 27 feet long. Two garage doors @ 18 feet by 8 feet.

My question is in regards to door height. Will an 8 foot high door be adequate for a 4x4 truck? I am assuming a small tractor will need a taller down than 8 feet, correct?

4x4 truck.. yep, it would be a big tall one that would not clear 8 foot. Most CUT sized tractors, will fit under 96 inch opening.. Make sure it is really 96 inches . A lot of smaller Cuts would fit easily and some of the larger ones it would be a barely thing. If they have folding ROPS (and most do) then of course no problem. My Kioti DK35SEH is 93.1 inches. Most cabbed tractors would not fit. Some small SCUT's would fit under a 7 foot door (84 inches). My Chevy Silverado Z71 would fit under my 7 footer, and that is a factory 3 inch lift. My present Silverado is not Z71 but still 4x4 and it fits fine even including the satelite antenna sticking up on top.

Good Afternoon Pettrix,
Two years ago I built a 28 ft by 42 ft with 10 ft ceilings. By the time I mounted the hardware for the over head doors the building would only accomodate 9 ft high doors, So I went with 9 by 9 doors, two side by side with one drive through bay. This may be a factor for you depending what your ceiling height is... :)

We built ours 3 years ago. It's 30' deep with 2 10'X8' doors and 1 8'X8' 16' deep for the future UTV. We both drive GMC 2500HD crew cab 4X4 with towing mirrors. There is 2' between the doors. If I had to do it again I would go with 12' doors. There is enough space that I don't hit doors but it is a little tight with the wide mirrors. The 8' height is fine.

Eight feet really is the minimum, but it will clear a stock 4x4 truck. A camper or a tractor or a forklift can easily be higher than eight feet. I went with two 10'X10' doors and I'm glad I did.

If you go that low be sure the door actually goes high enough to clear the finished opening.

I decided to go 30 x 50 with a 12' x12' door and put in a lift with the center bay ceiling @16'. Pop always told me build it big and you will fill it.

We are in the process of building our house/garage The garage is 36w 30d 10h We did 3 9x9 doors.

I would suggest attic trusses. We have a 2nd floor room 20w X 30d for storage. The extra cost for the attic trusses was very little.

what is the purpose for the 4 stall garage?

if it will be a utility shed, like on a farm. and you some time in future want to pull say a large camper. or have a boat, to larger size tractor, having the ^ peak end of the garage have 2 sliding doors. that open into a single entry way. can give you much more freedom when it comes to height.

i am not sure if i could live without 12 to 18 feet of clearance room. i tend to toss ropes around the rafters, and tie onto something and just lift things up into the air out of the way. and the tie other end of rope off to something.

it is rare but when i need the garage door clearance height, it makes for one large difference. and no need to worry about folding down a ROPS.

when it comes to the various shovels, rakes, brooms, etc... find that having a nice tall ceiling, lets me place hangers for the stuff up high and still easy to reach the handles. and then put small stuff below (tree shears, short handle shovel, etc..)

if you have a hunter in family, having ability to hang a deer up may make for a better higher ceiling.

to above, are you needing a work shop area? or just a parking area?

a good shop with easy access, more likely will be used, and tools put back, vs having things cluttered across one or two long walls of the shed / garage.

I need the parking space (2 or 3 vehicles) and some storage and maybe a small workspace.

I might get a small tractor and park that in there also.
