Gas in a Diesel engine

   / Gas in a Diesel engine #31
I am going to order a coolant heater for the machine, in the meantime it has got very cold here and i need the loader to move snow. I was thinking would it be better to use a spray bottle with gas in it to replace the ether when first starting the machine? as the gas has a lower ignition point and is easier on the engine than ether. or is this a bad idea?

I have been wondering the same thing myself. At work we use flammable brake clean on our trucks which is probably equally as bad as either as it drys the rings. I can say it takes more brake clean as it is less flammable and less volitale than ether. Years ago people would use wd40 as it would be a lubricant. I tried it but today's formula is less flammable.

I use carb cleaner on gas engines with amazing suscess!! Especiallysmall engines

silicone spray lubricant works great! ZEP, SiliKroil..etc..

anyone know how to bleed the fuel system on a 3-53 detroit after replacing filters or fuel pump? (or if you don't need to bleed anything and just keep cranking it till it fires?) its got me puzzled as there is no injection pump and the injectors are under the valve cover so I want to make sure I know how to bleed it after I work on the system.

-thanks

what ever you do make sure you fill the fuel filters as full as you can get them so there is no air gap to pump through the fuel system. I have never serviced a two stroke Detroit but I have worked on them.

On most engines you can crack an injector line open to bleed the fuel system. This being said your injector lines may be quite hard to get to.

You may need to start a new post to get a better answer like "help with two stroke Detroit fuel filters" good luck

the problem I am having is the engine will start and run for about 10 mins then it will slowly die. if you try to start it again right after it will not run, but if you wait awhile it will start again and do the same thing. when it does run it revs up and idles fine and blows no smoke. This problem seemed to start when the weather got cold but I don't think its gelled fuel. the fuel filters have been replaced recently. I am thinking fuel pump but I haven't seen one fail like this before.

I am unsure with your issue but I'm sure it's repairable! Sounds like fuel rated as you suggested. It may have a leak that's causing the fuel system to slowly leak down but I'm really not sure. I'm sure we have lots of people here that know a lot about 2 stroke detroits

Detroits are a full flow fuel system. The pressure after the pump should be about 60lbs when running. It sounds like you may have a plugged filter or an air leak on the tank side of the fuel pump line. I'd bet on the plugged filter. As the fuel gets colder it gets thicker, if the filter is at the end of it's life it will restrict the flow.

I guess I will try to replace the filters and see if that helps, what is the best way to prime the full flow system after I change them? (Other than fill them up prior to installation)

Hey Chris - check out my response to you in the other post under parts and repairs.

Also, a Detroit will bleed itself. Fill the filter housing and go. (assuming no air leaks anywhere)

The Detroit uses a different type of injection system than a Kubota or the other 4cycle Diesels. The injectors are a unit injector that is timed with a rocker arm off the cam shaft. The tolerances are a bit looser and the injector is cooled by a flow of fuel that circulates back to the tank. That flow is a bit better than .5 gpm at 1200 RPM. The top governed RPM is usually 2150 no load. Even an injector pump can survive some gas in the Diesel. VW suggested one gallon gas to ten gallons Diesel in extreme cold if the fuel was gelling. When disaster happens it is usually because the Diesel has been about empty and the tank was filled with gas. That becomes almost straight gas to the pump.
seems all the Euro diesels used to recommend gasoline mixes in the winter, my manual for an Iveco truck with a Duetz that i used to have had a mixture chart and if i recall some of the most extreme temps were 50 -50 gas and diesel mix. Seems that started changing with the "computer diesels"
