Gas in a Diesel engine

It sounds like water in the fuel system. More than likely in the tank. Are there any fuel scenes at banjo fitings, ect. Is it a gravity system to the Injection Pump? Make sure you have good fuel flow.

I did completely drain the tank and refill with fresh diesel with additive and no change. there is no injection pump on this engine just one mechanical fuel pump that feeds the injectors.

Make sure the fuel tank vent is not plugged.

I replaced the filters and filled them before installing and now the engine won't start at all. anyone know how to bleed the fuel line from the tank to the primary filter? Is the best way to pressurize the tank and crank the engine?

It sounds like either you are not getting fuel or possibly air. If the engine has an emergency shut down lever make sure it is in the open position. There are two fuel lines, one from the tank and a return line. If you pressurize the tank you will have to disconnect the return line and block the fitting from the tank. Wait for a good flow from the return line before trying to start the engine.
