I have 70 acres total, about 25 in rolling hills to bushhog, the rest in timber. Also have levee on 8 acre lake to bushhog. Some lowland above lake. Looking at GL 5030 with FEL plus box blade for gravel road maintenance. May do some plowing for food plots. Plan on getting Industrial tread. Is this tractor large enough? Comments.

Lin -

Welcome to TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif If you're going to stay a while, go ahead and fill out your personal info page, it really helps people help you.

I'd still like to have as much additional info as you can spare, but nothing you've said is making me say "no way, you need a bigger tractor". I have a 5030, and it's quite a lot of tractor. My next choice up would be an M6800, but that's just me.

As much as I love my hydro for what I do, maybe the GST would be a better choice for you. I've heard nothing but good things about that tranny and have to believe it's worth the extra money over the FST.

Good luck and welcome. Anyone else have some thoughts?

I think you'll do fine with the L5030, Lin. My L4300 seems to be a good match for my 50 acres doing much the same as what you're planning for your land and it's got 5 less HP and about 600lbs less weight than the L5030.

Like tree_guy said, the next significant jump up in power and weight will put you into the M6800; and that seems overkill for 70 acres...though I'd love to have one /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. However, if haying is in your future, an M6800 might be justified.

I agree with the others L5030 should work fine.

I would like to mention that the M4900 (replacement is M5040) cost about the same as the L5030 in my area($600.00 difference). It is a utility tractor, larger frame, tires; which handles the ruts or rough fields better. Just a thought.

I have been on mine nightly using what some would call a chisel plow, others a spring tooth harrow. This thing really digs deep. The 5030 handles it very well. Sure is nice to listen to some tunes and stay warm in the cab. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think you have the right HP for the job. I have 50 acres and I do lots of the same work. I mow 6 acres with my 90" finish mower, built and now maintain 3200' of gravel road, bush hog another 3800' of field trails and load round bales of hay. I've used the BH to install culverts and PHD to install fence. The L5030 does a great job at it all.

I would only suggest the you look at the HST over the GST. (That's because I have a HST and love it) So many things go so smooth with the HST single peddle operation. The only way it could be any better is if it read your mind and did what you were thinking..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
