In the 70's ( yes I was alive way back then ) the smartest Scientists on the planet predicted GLOW BULL - Cooling )

Oh ya it was big news HUGE news in fact. They scared the entire planet.

For your edification here is the abstract.....

Effects on the global temperature of large increases in carbon dioxide and aerosol densities in the atmosphere of Earth have been computed. It is found that, although the addition of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere does increase the surface temperature, the rate of temperature increase diminishes with increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. For aerosols, however, the net effect of increase in density is to reduce the surface temperature of Earth. Because of the exponential dependence of the backscattering, the rate of temperature decrease is augmented with increasing aerosol content. An increase by only a factor of 4 in global aerosol background concentration may be sufficient to reduce the surface temperature by as much as 3.5 ï½° K. If sustained over a period of several years, such a temperature decrease over the whole globe is believed to be sufficient to trigger an ice age.

No one has ever answered how the same "brilliant" scientists can look at the EXACT SAME INFORMATION and come up with TWO POLAR OPPOSITE conclusions.

So here is my conclusion because I think for myself and don't let Al Gore think for me.

If one Scientist says GLOW-BULL cooling is eminent, and another Scientist says GLOW- BULL warming is eminent...........in every book in the Universe that mens it's a DRAW., A TIE, EQUAL, ADVANTAGE NONE, ZERO-ZERO, NADA, ZILCH, ei mitè’¿n, ingenting, Ничего, Nada, Niente, Τίποτα ,Niets, khe chaina, Gar nichts, Wala lang, kuch nahin, 무가치 , nashi nai, ekkert, Nihil,

When I was a Meteorologist in the Marine Corps (1968-1975) the consensus was global cooling.
I congratulate on you on your linguist ability. Khang-ah

Hi

Nihil,

Here is a quote from Wikipedia Global cooling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"An early numerical computation of climate effects was published in the journal Science in July 1971 as a paper by S. Ichtiaque Rasool and Stephen H. Schneider, titled "Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide and Aerosols: Effects of Large Increases on Global Climate". The paper used rudimentary data and equations to compute the possible future effects of large increases in the densities in the atmosphere of two types of human environmental emissions .... " snipped
.....
"Both their equations and their data were badly flawed, as was soon pointed out by other scientists and confirmed by Schneider himself.[21] In January 1972, Charlson et al. pointed out that with other reasonable assumptions, the model produced the opposite conclusion.[23] The model made no allowance for changes in clouds or convection, and erroneously indicated that 8 times as much CO2 would only cause 2コC of warming.[24]"
(the [] are the Wikipedia refs)

That paper even at the time was not well accepted in the climate modelling community. It still gets bandied about. So basically it was not a good paper then and certainly now should not be used to make decisions on climate change.

Summer temperature variability may increase mortality risk for elderly with chronic disease

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 01:45 PM PDT

Seemingly small changes in summer temperature swings -- as little as 1ーC more than usual -- may shorten life expectancy for elderly people with chronic medical conditions, and could result in thousands of additional deaths each year, new research suggests.

From Global Temperature Trends Since 2500 B.C.
By the end of this 21st Century, a big cool down may occur that could ultimately lead to expanding glaciers worldwide, even in the mid-latitudes. We could possibly see even a new Great Ice Age. Based on long-term climatic data, these major ice ages have recurred about every 11,500 years. Well, you guessed it. The last extensive ice age was approximately 11,500 years ago, so we may be due. Again, only time will tell.
I don't think I would believe anything those two authors say if they believe that. The Earth has experienced at least five major ice ages in its 4.57 billion year history: the Huronian glaciation (2.4 to 2.1 billion years ago), the Sturtian/Marinoan glaciation (710 to 640 mya), the Andean-Saharan glaciation (460 to 430 mya), the Karoo Ice Age (350 to 260 mya) and the most recent Ice Age, which is currently ongoing (40 to 0 mya). The definition of an Ice Age is a long-term drop in global temperatures from the historical norm, accompanied by an extension of continental ice sheets. Most of the time, the Earth is not in an Ice Age, and the average global temperature is about 22 °C (71 °F). Right now the average global temperature is around 14.5 °C or 58 °F.

If I were going to pick a "straw man" to discredit I'd pick an easy one, say a Luddite or someone who thought the only "elements" were air, water, fire, earth, and maybe phlogiston.

Scientists are scientists when they are following the scientific method which typically is when they are researching and publishing in their area of expertise. It is not very notable to say that scientists make statements which fall outside those bounds.

When a baby doctor (Spock) gets an Olympic rowing medal the glory is not reduced because he is "out of his element" as apparently he was qualified in that field. When he involved himself in the Viet Nam war protest movement he was far afield from his training and books of baby psychology fostering permissiveness and instant gratification.

As an intelligent analyst you must consider your sources and modulate your weighting criteria depending on the attributes of the individual sources and applicability of their expertise. It is not helpful in trying to foster understanding to select a narrow source, highly refuted and discredited (one with a major contributor who has recanted his position) and brandish it like a sword collected from the vanquished.

What triggers a mass extinction? Habitat loss and tropical cooling were once to blame

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 11:59 AM PDT (Science Daily)

The second-largest mass extinction in Earth's history coincided with a short but intense ice age. Although it has long been agreed that the so-called Late Ordovician mass extinction was related to climate change, exactly how the change produced the extinction has not been known. Now, scientists have determined that the majority of extinctions were caused by habitat loss due to falling sea levels and cooling of the tropical oceans.

Impact of climate change on forest diseases assessed

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 06:36 AM PDT

Climate change is projected to have far-reaching environmental impacts both domestically and abroad. A recently published report examines the impact of climate change on forest diseases and how these pathogens will ultimately affect forest ecosystems in the Western United States and Canada.

U.S. records warmest March; more than 15,000 warm temperature records broken

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 08:40 AM PDT

Record and near-record breaking temperatures dominated the eastern two-thirds of the United States and contributed to the warmest March on record for the contiguous United States, a record that dates back to 1895. More than 15,000 warm temperature records were broken during the month.

phlogiston.

I like that term. It can cover so many facts in just one word. Makes life much simpler for me!
