I considered them a while ago but basically gave up the idea. Unless you buy a basic 2WD, manual trans 4 popper, there's not much of a price advantage to purchasing one. Another reason for lack of popularity might be that American buyers are currently into BIG. Not many want a puddle jumper today.

I disagree about lack of demand...there must be a reason Ford & GM brought them back. Not everyone wants or needs a fullsize truck, and todays "mid size" trucks are almost as big as a full size one was 25 years ago...they're a far cry from the Japanese toy trucks of the 80s & 90s.

Sometimes the radio just blares out as loud as it will go. The dash lights go out often. When he goes around a cure it will ding and say his back door is open.

He said he wishes he would have never bought the truck.
Sometimes you get a parblem that really sucks, no matter the brand.

I bought a NEW Ford 350 that would turn the lights on at night and the batt would be dead in the morning. The rear end oil would go low, and no matter how many times it went back to the dealer, they never did fix it! I finally fixed it by sending it down the road!!

My buddy bought a used chevy pu, it would turn the radio on at night. He would wake up at night and could hear the radio playing in his pu. That's probably why it was for sale when he bought it! lol

I bought a Toyota pu, it jumped out of reverse from the day I bought it, until the day I sold it.

It seems every brand puts one out like that, from time to time...

Not sure if his is a 2017 or 18. I think it was the first year they put the 8 speed in it

And with everything in the vehicle being controlled by a computer, these kinds of problems can be a nightmare to troubleshoot. A bad ground or a pinched wire somewhere can cause all sorts of grief.
And there's really no need for half of this stuff being controlled by a computer.

Not wanting to throw cold water on this topic - but... All of the auto articles have rated the Canyon as the worst of the mid-size pickups. I have no idea nor opinion as to why or even if its true, but that's exactly what I read. Well?

Pretty much the opposite of what I ha e found. My reading suggests the outdated Tacoma platform is at the bottom.
Thanks to all who have taken time to respond.

If you read the Car and Driver review, they rated the Canyon/Colorado ahead of the Ranger, the Tacoma and the Frontier. Of course, I always maintain they don't really want a pickup truck when they review them because they rated the Jeep Gladiator and the Ridgeline at the top of the class.

Interesting. So what have we solved here?

I am not trying to solve anything. I am looking for input and have received some, more is welcome.
I will make a decision when the time comes.
My last two have been GMCs so I am predisposed in that direction. It appears that I can get into one for less than a Ranger or Yota equipped similarly.

I believe one reason for that is the Ranger is new, and updated versions tend to be pricier. The Toyota is a Toyota and you pay for the name. I like the looks of the new Ranger but am not ready for all of the computerized whiz-bang that comes with it. They all carry a 5yr/100k mile drive train warranty. If I was in the market trying to decide between the three you mention I probably would go with the lowest price tag... but cheap is my middle name.
