Becasue of the tv show, I have been thinking about putting together some sort of liteway rig to work some of the small streams in my area. You can pan for gold on State property, but you cant use a dredge. You can use a dredge on private property with proper permission. Of course I would do it for recreation only, I wouldnt expect to strike it rich. The closer I get to retirement, the more time I seem to have on my hands.

In the past, I have tried the creeks with just a pan, some classifier screens and bunch of 5 gal buckets. I would shovel the dirt into a classifier screen on top of a bucket full of water. shake it around to sort out the bigger stuff and keep reduceing the size of my screens until I was down to the fines and black sand. Then I would tote the buckets home and dump in my wheelbarrow. I would then run the garden hose into the wheelbarrow to float out the silt and dirt. I always would find some color, just never enought to keep me interested very long. 3 or 4-5 gal buckets of washed dirt would only yield a handfull of black sand, and in that sand would only be a few specks of gold. A lot of work, wadeing in water and mud, toteing heavy buckets, with very little payback. I probably should spend a little time learning about precious stones. The largest Sapphare (sp) was found not to far from where I live. Rubies and garnets are something else that are supposed to be common around here. I could probably make more finding rare stones than I could looking for gold.

My Family and I went to several of the attractions in NC where you pan for Gold and dig for precious stones several years ago. You paid a certain amount for each bucket of dirt and you used their facilities to search and possibly extract some gold, rubies, precious stones. This was a mine. I ask the owner-manager why he didn't mine the area himself, and he personally told me that he made much more money offering this service to the tourists. He stated that there were occasional finds that were lucrative, but most discoveries were only small and not worth much.

I have seen actual assays on some of the properties here and the assaying companies pretty much said the same thing. Yes they had some gold, but not enough to make a full blown mining operation profitable. Their recommendations to the property owners was to setup panning operations to serve the public.

While I have seen nuggets weighing close to a ounce, these are very rare. Mostly what you find here is flour gold and ity bity specks. Small nuggets are worth more as jewerly than as gold weight.

The big find or ledgen around here would be to find the lost Abernathy gold coins minted in Dalonaga Ga. Supposely, a old country store owner used to let people buy their goods using gold dust. He took all the gold to the mint located in Dalonaga ga and had them minted into coins. He had a stroke shortly after getting back home with the freshly mined coins and wasnt able to tell anybody where he had buried them. Only one or two have ever been found. I know one person that metal detects for it ever year, but he hasnt ever found anything.

Discovering that cache of gold coins would most definitely be worthwhile searching for. Not only considering the price of gold today, but the numismatic value of those gold coins would be extremely high. Thanks for posting. I have never heard of that legend before.

The show I just saw ,they had a good ''season'' I assumeed they meant the gold mining season. But now Im thinking they meant season of shows .lol
Anyways close to 100,000 PROFIT WOW GREAT. and they said to split between the four or five people.
Thats great income..do doubt about it...with just four of them they cleared close to 25,000 each not bad if it were 1920..
Oh wait I said cleared, should read more like close to 25,000. each BEFORE taxes. So in the end they got less than the 25,000.
Oh wait. what , if the ''boss' took more? then the others would get less than the 25,000.:confused2::confused2:
I make more cutting lawns in a year lol

Your still forgetting that they need to pay for fuel out of that 170k they make by selling the 100 oz of gold that they hope to find. There is 150 days in the season and it costs $1000/day in fuel etc.

And their daily break down costs.... Not an episode yet that hasn't cost them at least $5k in repairs....

Or paying the claim owner 15% or whatever he gets, i mean none of it makes any sense yet they keep saying it!

This says it all:

In a formatted documentary, AKA: Reality Show, the story lines are written by script writers before the characters, (participants) every set foot on location (in our case the mine.) The entire show is scripted, outlined and understood by all the production team but is only revealed to the participants that need to influence the storyline. The storyline is what you see as the viewer and all of the drama that is created is for your ratings which sell the program. I know about the script because I had a sneak peak read in April at the Sandy Airport.

My character from the beginning was as the å*µreenhorn? 途ookie? and more deceitfully ç™»utsider ,牌ictim and even possibly ç*ºillian? Todd had multiple meetings with me about how the summer would be hard for me. He was planning on 途unning plays as he called them which started with me hitting a car he purchased for the sole purpose of me 殿ccidently running into. I grew the beard and kept my tooth out which I actually have an implant for not too different from the dentist that was a character on The Hangover. I was OK with the whole idea, as I have been in music entertainment for years! Shoot lets do it I thought!
