JohnS,

Its ok to vent. It does help. We where very lucky in that we
found a good group of three different vet practices to help
Chase. None of the vets had a problem working with each
other.

My wife found an dog cancer group on the Internet. They
have been more than helpful. I think they helped my wife
try different ideas and medicines for Chase. There is a lot of
information and new drugs that your vet may not know about.

If you want I can ask my wife on the address/website of the
group. The vets only thought Chase had a couple of months
tops but she was able to have almost 9 months of time and
only the last 2-4 weeks where bad. The vets really expected
Chase to go quickly. I'll never know for sure but I think the
reason Chase lasted as long as she did is from the effort my
wife put into Chase. And much of what she did was with
infomation from the cancer group. They might not be able to
help you situation but maybe they can....

I think my wife found out from the cancer group that vets
will make house calls to put a pet to sleep. That really
suprised me. Having a pet put to sleep in your house is not
for everyone but it was absolutely the best thing that could
have happened for Chase and us. It made the whole
unavoidable event much less stressful for Chase and us...

Dan,

I would appreciate the web address for the dog cancer info. I'm sure it can help us as well. Thanks.

Our vet will come out to our place. She had let us known about that option, early on. We certainly prefer to have her buried on our property. I am a little concerned that this might happen over the winter months, when the ground is frozen. I need to work on a possible contigency plan, in case it does happen.

John,

I already has asked the wifey to send me the link in case you
asked. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Here it is....

Another option besides burial is cremation. We did this with
Thorpe who died in the fall of 2000 and we are waiting for
Chase to come back. We should get her ashes today or
tomorrow. We prefer this since we can always have the
dogs with us in some small way. The last dog that was "mine"
was buried in the back yard in Florida in the late 80s. My
parents moved out of that house so the grave is gone from
us...

Thorpe died suddenly in 2000 and we had to make a snap
decision at 0200 on what to do. I think it cost $400 for her
cremation! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Chase was somewhere around $150-200.
I really did not check to closely... /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif If I had to hand
dig ANY grave $200 is worth the money. And I have a
backhoe for the tractor. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hope this helps,

Thanks Dan,

I will check it out tonight. If we lived in a village or subdivision lot, then we would seriously consider cremation. We have a spot picked out on the side hill, under a large pine. It seems only fitting that her final resting spot is overlooking the area that she lived. Yes, we might not always own the property, but if need be, could always add an access clause to the sale contract. Unfortuneatly, the area is not accessable to the tractor and will need to be hand dug.

Dan -- We're getting requests for help from a rescue in the Memphis area that has too many dogs for them to handle. If they are shipping dogs all the way to us in Vermont, North Carolina is a stroll down the block.

Email me privately via the rescue link on our Website if interested.

Dan,
I can't tell you what to do. All I can say is you (and your wife's) concerns about your dog speaks volumes as to what kind of compassionate people you both are.
It's real easy to "own" a dog. Tie it up to a doghouse and forget it. Never give a thought how lonely, bored and probably cold and hungry it is. Folks like you deserve the privilege to have pets. Others, in my opinion, don't.
Good luck!

Boondox,
Just venting here. Please forgive me. Reading your bio it looks like not only are we close in geography but also in philosophy.

Terry,

Our dogs pretty much own US. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

There are many people who should not have children much
less pets. Down East they had a father kidnap his 5 week
old baby from the mother because he did not want to pay
child support. So daddy dearest got a friend to take the
baby while he was talking with the mother. The kid was
gone for 50+ hours and these two thugs would not tell where
the baby was located. Turned out a local guy, this is a very
remote area, saw the two and reported the information to the
POlice. They found the infant in a shed with a towel wrapped
around its head. Its been cold down here but thankfully this
week has been a bit warmer. The towel, which I'm sure was
put on the kid to keep it quiet and maybe smoother it,
ironically kept the baby alive....

These two should never see the light of day as free men but
I'm sure they will..... /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Dan,
My family's prayers are with you as you mourn your loved one.

We had to put our girl Boo(mixed lab shepard) down due to effects of hip displasia Sept. 24. after 12 1/2 great years. Boo was my constant companion who went with me to work most of her years. Standing by the door waiting for me to say "Let's Go." She couldn't get up in the truck the last year, but she always wanted to go.
My wife and I still catch each other sobbing from time to time. just seems too quiet in the house. My son wants a new pup now, but it just seems too soon. Our plan is to wait until spring to get a new friend.

Your right the dogs do own us.

My thoughts are with you. Take care,Marty
