I have a 150 acre farm outside of Pennsylvania and need to purchase a disc to replace an older one I have which is failing. I have a New Holland TN75 and a John Deere 5325, and thus have decided that I should probably get a 10 to 10.5 foot disc. I've talked to one dealer who recomended a sunflower disc and gave me a quote of 10,500 dollars for a sunflower 1211-10 which weighs 3978 lbs and has 8.5 inch spacing. My local Deere dealer said he'd sell me a 10'6" frontier disc for 6700 dollars with 9 inch spacing. My first question is what exactly is John Deere's Frontier line? Is it made by a different manufacturer or is it John Deere equipment? Is it made in the USA? Secondly, has anyone had any experience running discs made by these two manufactures? Apparently the John Deere frontier disc is also much lighter weight than the sunflower model which makes me wonder if it is a high quality attachment. Also, do people think that a John Deere 5325 will pull a Sunflower 1211-10 disc? Does Deere make it's own disc which would be comparable to the sunflower model?

Sunflower was bought by Agco recently but they have always been a tillage company with a great reputation. Your tractors can easily handle the 10' disc so go with the one that weighs the most and has the better reputation.

I pull a 12' with a TN 65 as long as the ground is dry. If it is wet I use the 10'.

I have some fronteir impliments, they are "OK." I was once told by the salesman that deer doesn't make it, just brand it.

also, I ended up getting a 6 foot disk that weighs about 800 pounds and I really wish it was heavier. heavy is good!

I have a 50 hp JD 5105.

How often are you going to use it? $10,000 to replace what you have seems steep! If you like the disk you have, rebuild it and save $9,000. If you NEED a new piece of equipment, OLD JD disks are good. Neww JD disks..... If you realllly want to spend that type of cash for a disk, Sunflower and Kunz make the best that is available. Mike

The current disc I have is an 8 foot disc which is too small for my operation to begin with. My main problem with it, however, is simply that it is too unreliable. Weldings are constantly cracking and things constantly break. For my operation, not having a disc at certain key times (like right now when I need to be putting covercrops down) really hurts my productivity. The sunflower discs are very expensive, but considering that I buy most of my equipment planning on using it for a very long period of time, I think the cost can be justified. I'm planning on demoing a 10'6" sunflower disc soon and I'm hoping my John Deere 5325 has no problem pulling it. The sunflower disc weighs just under 4,000 pounds, I'm hoping that my Deere, which has 4wd, the 24 by 24 transmission, and full front weights as well as filled wheels will be able to pull this implement.
