Good Help (So Hard to Find)

Millions play Farmville. Doubt many of them could dig a hole much less run a tractor.

The radio show I listen to had people call in with stories about Farmville and similar games. One man is getting divorced because his wife constantly plays Farmville. She quit her job to play Farmville. And that is about all she does. Sad.

Go OUTSIDE and grow some carrots.

I take technical questions on forklifts for the forklift dealership I work for. Young, old, doesn't matter. Just took a call today from a 45 year old guy that has been a mechanic for years. He couldn't find a working back-up alarm on a forklift.
Me.....Ummm, follow the beeping.
Him....I can't find it.

Him....I am

He has been looking for the alarm for over 2 hours and as far as I know may still be looking for it.
Idiocy doesn't discriminate based on age.

Kinda makes you wonder why you didn't just tell him where it is. Isn't that your job? ;>)

Don't overestimate what young guys know about work - ranch work or any other kind. I don't think there is an 'On The Ranch' video game, so how would they know?

Seriously, teenagers look grown up but it's a thin disguise; or have you forgotten? (smile)

Actually there sort of is. I'm young enough that I still play video games. Just played a western shooter game and when it ended my character got sent back to his ranch to do chores. It was rather odd.

That said I have three boys and a nephew that live with me and one of the most important things I try to teach them IMO is the satisfaction of a hard job well done. I don't really care what they choose to be when they grow up but if I don't teach them to work hard they won't be anything. 7

Verry well said, my dad did the same with me and i hope i teach my kids as good as he taught me.

But, it wasn't in a "Today we're going to learn how to work hard and do a good job" kind of way. It was giving me a task and riding my butt until it was done right. There wasn't any of this, "Don't be hard on Brian, you'll hurt his feelings" crap. Anything less than an "A" in school was unacceptable. I was pushed to do my best. I failed more than I succeeded. By the time I got out of High School I hated my Dad.

I think I was out on my own less than a couple of months, when I realized my parents weren't as stupid or as mean as I had thought they were. I was grateful for the lessons they taught me or showed me by example. I saw the people around me that didn't have the ability to show up or complete a task to satisfaction. I was given an incredible gift that I didn't even know I was getting and fought getting it the entire time.

I too, hope that I can pass these gifts down to my daughter.

That is so true, we didnt learn it over night it took years of the forcing it on to us and thats why we are the men we are today. Im shure my kids (along with yours) will fight us every step of the way but someday (like you and I) say thanks dad for pushing me to do my best and not letting me b a sloucher. What scares me today is the parents that dont teach that and dont interact with there kids, just think these are the leaders of tomarrow. Good luck with your daughter.:thumbsup:

Kinda reminds me of the 18yo I hired as a laborer when building the house. Nary a task he hadn't done before or knew how to do better, even though he'd never even seen my type building material before, nor could he read a plan.
Some days my patience was tested.

Pretty good thread. Kids that can't get up in the morning. Want to to work their hours. Want you to pick them up and take them home from work. Have no respect for an equipment operator or anyone else who has spent years of his life to become what they are and make it look so easy. Sometimes I think my purpose in work is to teach and weed out my replacement rather than teach someone a worthwile trade. At least it is to me.
