I wonder if Whipper would like me? He might be able to sniff out an "Easterner"...

Whipper does not really like anybody. She only likes running with golf carts.

76˚ sunny, tractor time.

Whipper will come to you for a Milk Bone. But runs about 20' away to eat it. That's the closest my wife and I have gotten in 7 years.

well, this sure went well, right?
I told them I could only afford 1000 dollars worth of stone, vs. the 3500 estimate that never gave me what I asked for, the stone price broken out...
They appear to have taken that poorly, nor did they like me quoting Farmer. Sigh.

The real story is that her cousin worked for me, had an emotional break down on the job, granted a very hot day, and stomped off my job saying he couldn't take it any more. Bizarre to the max. And I paid the guy fully for what he had done. Well...family sticks together, I told the gravel guy his cousin had done work for me, they talked, I got badmouthed, and the fix was in. What complete idiots. Well, lots of guys with gravel trucks locally.

one more case of someone coming on to my property, which by community standards is large, and decides it's time to award themselves a bonus.
Except I'm not as dumb as they think.

Please have your trucking buddies call me so I can talk with them about where they buy there stone. My price is based on hauling the stone with a $100,000. truck, liability, collision, workmens compensation insurance, drivers salary and fuel, not to mention tire prices and the upkeep on my trucks. I appreciate you contacting us, but at this time all my trucks are tied up. I suggest you call your online buddies to help you.

Rupp Construction/Marshallville Sand and Gravel ...

Farmer's prices were pretty much spot on for the area around here, based on me calling within the last 12 months and getting a quote on a load of crusher run.

Fact is, prices haven't changed all that much (10% ?) since we relocated/redid the driveway ... which was back in '04 ...

... RS, do you want this to be a hobby or a business? How you approach it matters greatly. I warn you now as a business they will lose the allure and as a hobby you can only make enough to help supplement the cost of having them. And this is true in anything, from photography, silk screening, Art Design (those were my hobby turned business). ...
Kev,

For the time being it's going to be a hobby, but if I can create it into a business as time goes on I may well do that. Just have to see.

Am familiar with things losing their luster and appeal once they move into the realm of "must be done" ...

That doesn't sound too bad ...

Although I have managed to pretty well pack the 896 sq ft of the shop here full of stuff ...
Did you leave out a 0 on your square footage?
Pick up Squeak, hold it (him? her?) out at arms length and swing in a circle. That's enough room to swing a cat in. You should have a MINIMUM of that area for EVERY type of job.
With all the jobs you post about you need a minimum of 4,000 sq feet.
And what about your Jinma chipper mod?

Drew you now face the problems of the "family is everything, right or wrong" and you have complicated it by telling them you should be able to get it cheaper.

OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE A MAN OF MEANS!!

You are trying to buy a "BOAT", otherwise known as a hole in the water which one dumps money in.

Try to find some other gravel company and offer to let them put up a sign "Gravel provided by XXX"

Poured first cup of coffee. 34ー with mostly clear skies. Heading to 66ー with mix of sun and clouds. Today is a lay back day. Before finishing our trip to Mesa, AZ tomorrow. Today is also closing day on my mothers house. Another reason for staying close to phone access.
Yesterday we drove from Truth or Consequences, to Silver City, NM. Nice mountain trip with road heights over 9,000'. First picture is of a valley where fire hit a couple years ago. Gila National Forest. Second is of the Santa Rita Cooper Mine. Picture shows less than 1/4 of the open mining operation.

Good Morning All.

Your trip has been sounding great. I hope you were able to pick up some Hatch chiles as you passed through the area.

Everybody has Hatch Chiles around here. Must have been a good year. Salsa and other chiles product are on the warm side this year.

Time for twin 50's on the handlebars...

Too much recoil, Drew. I'm waiting on a portable laser rig.

you live in a pretty area. When I zoom in with Google Maps Chico comes up, but then Paradise. Somehow Google thought Paradise CA was important enough to imbed it in every layer of cartography. Perhaps that's how they see the area. No wonder you live there...driving in the Plumas Forest?

My place is east and a bit south of Paradise. Apparently it was a retirement hot spot back in the '30s for a lot of Hollywood types, and the buttes south of there along Durham Pentz road were used as a backdrop for the horse jumping scene at the start of Gone With The Wind. Plumas NF is full of Jeep trails and a great place to explore on a quad or dirt bike.

Not many people up here to spoil it yet, either. THAT's why I chose this spot...:cloud9:

After you get the job done properly, send JoBob a copy of the invoice so he knows what his competition looks like.

You can also tell him one of your Internet buddies was having road base DELIVERED (25 miles one way) at $485/20 cu. yd. That's one transfer truck load, and the driver dropped every load exactly where I needed it.

4:30 PM and it's been raining on and off all day. So far we've picked up 0.46", a nice gentle rain with a light breeze most of the time. A stronger storm is supposed to come in tonight and dump another inch or so with high winds. Probably won't get much sleep with all the crashing and banging goin' on, but I'll take it if it means we get more rainfall.

So far we've not had enough to slow the fall of Lake Oroville, which has been dropping ten feet every month. It's only twenty-five feet above the historic low right now, so maybe the storms over the next few days will start the levels back up.

Drew $8.50 per ton including tax. Delivery is $75.00 per hour truck time coming and going. Not sure about prices in your area. Hopefully this helps

Any more I just call the local quarry for stone, they quote price per ton delivered. Course I'm only about 5 miles from a quarry. Haven't had to get any for awhile, but might soon. Thinking about putting a gravel pad beside my barn, that may someday be a covered shed off the side of the barn.

I use to call quarry for stone. Haul bills were killing me. This guy buys from quarry and then hauls. His haul bill is about 50-65% of quarry's. Mainly because quarry was trying to make a profit for dispatching. Oh and he will dump or tailgate spread. Same money.

40 going to 64. No rain here, either until Monday.

Have some wild black-eyed susans blooming in my field, and dandelions in the yard.

Son's car needed new front discs, rotors, and calipers...wished I had the confidence to tackle it, rather than the $550 it cost.

Good morning. Managed a couple of hours in the dry yesterday, although I spent much of that chasing after things blowing around in the wind. No wind yet this morning, but we are back to squelch, squelch, squelch ...

I had been helping out at another farm yesterday and set off back home just as daylight was beginning to fade. Hadn't quite got to the end of their track when my mobile rang to say my counterweights were still down on the ground . Oops, I had re-profiled the entire length of their driveway without feeling or hearing anything :ashamed:

Coffee is done brewing. 36ー with clear skies this morning. Heading to 76ー with mix of sun and clouds (Mesa, AZ). Last day of RV travel until next spring. About 350 miles.
Eric, I knew there was a down side to a cab tractor. :D
Good Morning All.
