Got Ambushed Last Night and Shot!

Well my thoughts. I never carry on my property seems kinda silly no neighbors within miles. But i never go outside to investigate things without real shoes, cloths and three dogs. If this guy attacked me my dogs would still be chewing on the bones.

Darryl: How intersting. My wife out of the clear blue last week went to the local gunshop and bought herself a nice Glock and some really nice JHP to keep in it. Her justification was just in case. Said her Colt 44 was too big. She knows how to use it. Now I just hope she ain't planning to shoot me.

JB, Ya gotta love that! BTW, that's why I went with the SP 101 for her, small frame, easily concealed with a big punch. Bought the Black Talons right before Winchester took them off the market. The liberal bunch called them "Cop Killer" bullets, I like to think of them as varmint loads.
As for getting shot by the wife, I may be on the hit list myself, mine reminded me to lock the garage but it was storming last night when I left for work and I left one of the overhead doors up because I didn't want to get back out of the car. Won't make that mistake again ( may not get the chance, she's been quietly hiding upstairs since the police left from taking their report)!!

Definitely better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Things go bump in the night, or when in doubt, put a gun in your hand first... You can always put the gun away later if it turns out you don't need it. Glad you are allright, sounds like you, pardon the pun, had your hands full during the struggle, and must have done a pretty impressive job on him to drive him away when he was the one with the gun. Well done.

They should've kept him in jail, he's obviously dangerous! That's amazing though, I can't believe you got shot. Welcome to the club (I got shot in the leg a long time ago).

Jim,
Although a Glock is super nice, it doesn't seem befitting next to carrying a Colt 44 or a 45 long in the historic town of Tombstone, AZ.:)

I have a different philosophy. My dogs are the early warning system. I make the friend vs. foe decision and take action when necessary. If a little kid wanders onto the property (which is a lot more common than a bad guy), the kid is safe.

In addition to potential intruders, we have bear, mountain lion and wolves. Even though the State of Oregon says we don't have wolves, I saw two with my own eyes 18 months ago.

Now, I wouldn't choose to take on any of those with a .38, but I will take the .38 over a rock or a shovel any day. I almost always have a trenching shovel when I walk the dogs (yup it works both for dog clean up, and serves as a walking stick), and it is better than the .38 for snakes.

I carry a Ruger New Vaquero .45 on my tractor when I am grubbing cactus. Its loaded with snake shot and works great for rats and rattlers. Guess I could use the shovel on the rattlers, but guess I like to burn powder.

I don't do much investigating outside. Turn out the inside lights and do a lot of looking from the shadows. Figure its better to lay an ambush rather than run into one.

Your are right. Gun hidden in the house does no good.

Yes he could take the scumbag to court and probably easily win a cash award. The problem is that the scumbag probably has no money for him to collect and if the scumbag has a little money, his lawyer will get it keeping him out of jail. Then he is out all of the money he spent on court costs, filing fees etc. :(

If the perp had money, he likely would go on a quarterly vacation to certain countries where it only takes sufficient funds to do whatever you want, instead of skulking around local farms.

It would be a lot harder to go forward with a civil suit if there isn't a conviction-- the accused was apparently sprung the next day making it sound like there isn't strong immediate evidence to hold him. Shooting someone doesn't seem like something to be taken lightly, just let them walk out the next day...

Good Mornin DoubleO,
Wow, what a story ! Just read the whole thread and Im still scratchin my head !

First let me say that I hope you recover from all your wounds fully, both physical and otherwise !!!

Second I hope they can round this guy up again before its too late for someone else !

Ive allways have owned shotguns and rifles but never any pistols. My state police buddy keeps telling me to apply for my pistol permit, I think your post just pushed me over the edge on that score ! ;)

Good luck and heal up soon !
