I've been meaning to reply to your thread.
I hope you are OK and your wounds heal up alright without any problems and still good use of your hand. What happened to you is everybody's nightmare. AND it could happen to any one of us. I hope they throw the book at that guy. His 3 shots were not just accidental, and what he said meant he wanted to murder you.
Anyway, I wanted to share this is why I carry a firearm everywhere I go around the property. I also have them available in strategic places in the home and barn. They are not only for snakes and varmints but the 2 legged kind as well. I have shared the story before about 3 men approaching my Loretta while we were camping and she was alone. On their approach, she brandished a .357 magnum and they turned around and left. What would have happened if she did not show them her weapon? Why were they approaching and then turned around and left?
I hope it never happens again, but if I were you, anytime I went to check on things in the future, I'd be armed ... just in case.
