Got my 1st quote for M5040HDC VS L4740HST with Cabs

I can't decide between the above tractors right now. I like the L because of the Hydro Transmission, but I think I might be better off with the GST. But it not offered in the L with the cab.
I like the M because of the size. Little worried about how hard it will be to use the trany.

About 70% of the tractor is being used for Discing, Plowing, Tilling, Making Beds, and Mulching. The remaining 30% if for odds and ends. Brush hog 3 time a year, using the bucket to move dirt or lift something, etc.

Right now I will be farming 5 acres and will be up to 10 acres within 2 years.

So, what do you think about the prices?
What other options should I make sure to get with either of the tractors?
Any suggestions?



PS. Currrently, I have been using a B7800. It works, but I need something with a wider stance. My rows are way small because of the width of the tractor. Also, I could have a little more power in HP and size and weight.

There are a lot of happy M owners here and I'm sure they'll chime in. I'm on my 2nd L and absolutely love the HST. If you do any FEL work, it's the cat's meow. I'm glad to see you going with the QA - it is wonderful. The only thing I would suggest adding is a 3rd-function valve in the front. I can't comment on the prices tho...

After the B7800, either of these machines will seem like quite a change. But between the two choices IMHO the M is a LOT more tractor for a very small price difference. The LA1153 loader has about 50% more lifting capacity, the M's cab is very roomy compared to the L's, the M is stronger in every specification. The HST is nice, but for disking, plowing, tilling etc. a gear tractor is well matched, easy to operate, and more power gets to the pto & wheels. Regarding options, your list looks fine - one minor item might be FEL bucket width - I think 66" or 68" width is handier (do they offer?) On the price front, there seems to be a little more flexibility on M pricing than on L's - maybe you could tell the dealer you like the L price, but would like the M tractor.

Most people would say the M5040 is too much tractor for farming 5-10 acres. But if you're talking about plowing and discing all that it would really likely not be too big. It is a lot more tractor than the L4740 for just a few thousand more though. But I would see which one you really like better. Drive them both around. If there's no difference you may want to lean toward the L4740 with GST based on price alone. But you do have to consider what kind of plow and disc you are going to be using and on what kind of soil. If you said you were going to use at least a 3-bottom plow in clay soil I'd definately favor the M5040. There's just something about ground-engaging work and a standard shift transmission that seem to go together in my opinion. I agree, if most of your work is going to be ground engagement with little mowing and especially loader work you'd be better served with a geared transmission. If you said that most of your work was going to be mowing with a lot of directional changes or FEL work then I would say definately go for the HST. The synchro shift standard transmission on the M-series tractors is not difficult at all. I found driving that tractor more comfortable, a better ride, and more pleasant than driving my truck.

Take my information here for what it's worth. . .not much. I have not driven either of these tractors for any extended length of time. But I personally am planning to get an M7040 very soon. So, of course, I favor the M-series. It's your money and your tractor; buy what feels right for you.

I would go with the M5040. Like has already been said it's a lot more tractor and for operating ground engaging attachmentsthe gear drive transmission is a better choice in my opinion.

They currently don't offer the GST tranny on the L4740 Cab Model. That is why I have started looking at the M5040.

Well it seem almost all prefer the M5040.

To be honest I prefer it too. I am only hesitating because of the trany. I know in the back of my mind it is a better trany.

For me the fear come because I have never had to drive a manual trany. I think this is call intimidation.

So, Let see what your opion is on the M5040 if you are unfamilar with a manual transmission.

As far as alphabet soup goes I can't tell you. But I'll bet that first quote was without a cab. The second one is probably with a cab and very full equipped. Still though, it seems incredibly high. I'm not sure how you are obtaining your quotes. Are you sitting down talking with the dealers or are these obtained over the internet or fax?

The more I think about it the more confused I get. I don't see how any M5040 would ever cost $50,000!! No matter if you had it with a cab and every option on it. That sounds about like an M9540 equipped that way.

They are both with cabs. I am sure of that. Other options could be different. Maybe the 2nd or higher quote is gold plated or something.

The 1st, lower quote is from a local dealer.

The 2nd, higher quote is from the internet.

I wonder what a good price would be for a M5040 with cab?

HDC = 4WD Utility utility tractor with hydraulic shuttle and Ultra Grand cab

DTC = 4WD Utility utility tractor with Synchro shuttle and Ultra Grand cab

I show no listing for a DTHSC.

There is about a $1500 price difference between the two with the HDC being more expensive.

BTW, $34,000 is a great price. You are basically getting the loader for free.

Seriously, get your dealer to guarantee you that price quote for a certain amount of time. Don't feel rushed to decide. But if that truly is such a great quote then make him stick to it for some time while you're deciding.

I imagine the internet price (53K) was the MSRP. I just got a M7040, cab, loader (self leveling)..72'bucket, second remote, shuttle, air-ride, bale spear, grill guard.. (I think they put this on all the tractors with loaders), CI rear wheels and beet juice for 38.6K. I priced another local area dealer who was pretty close to that also

That might be, but the MSRP for my 7040 without loader was 45K...add a cab and loader and it gets right up there. of couse, the MSRP is just that... a suggestion..and like with cars... something to make you feel good when the dealer comes "down!"

My MSRP estimate came right from the January 2006 Kubota price book.
