Grand L40 or L60

Yea, there are just too many applications where 3240 (And 3130 before it) can be marginal on power. They are fine for most loader applications, but are low on PTO and get fussy when you add lots of weight (ie backhoe).

Hmm.. Ok.
Looks like I'll have to start trying to find a 3540 then. The 3940 just jumps up to much in size and being as I'm going to use this in the woods on tight trails I don't want it to be overly sized. Honestly, the 3800 size is probably a better fit for me size wise.
Thing is the three dealers I talked with don't even stock a 3540. They only stock and sell the 3240 and 3940s.
Maybe I'll have to make a small trip to PA. ;)

I settled on the 3540. The 3940 was just to big to work in the woods like you said. The 3540 is a little slow going when the BH is on and I have to go up steep hill but it makes it up ok. Other than that it has plenty of power for my needs. I see you are in MA/VT. Give Jim Crane at Emerich a call. He is a good guy and they are nice folks to deal with.

Being another 3240 owner I would agree. I'm at 3000 ft., so I loose HP to boot. I have a GST, not a HST, so maybe that helps. If I had the funds at the time I would have bought a 3940. More HP is nice, but so far I have been able to everything I need to do.

Not meaning to hijack this thread - but I will temporarily - how much HP is lost with elevation? I'm at 3400 feet and haven't factored HP loss into my planning and attachment usage. Is there a formula I can apply?

Thanks for confirming my thoughts.
Will do. Can you PM me with what location he is at or his number? (They seem to have a couple locations)
I'm not against traveling to get what I want.

Only Kubota can tell you for sure, but rule of thumb for a NATURALLY apirated engine is 3% loss for every 1000' of elevation over sea level. So your 35hp gross at 3000feet is approximatly 34hp gross. Philip

I have purchased two tractors from Kevin Emerich, great guy to deal with. They just opened the second location in the last two or three months.

I was making the same choice a couple years ago - should I go with a 3540 or step up to a 4240 for the bigger front axle and loader. I had a chance to park a 5240 side by side with a 3540. There was very little (inches) difference in length or width. I went with the 5240 (used with cab). I have been using it to clear land and have found it to be pretty nimble in the woods. Sure, you need a bigger path then for a B series - but any path big enough for a 3540 will likely be fine for a 3940 or 4240. Good luck in your decision! Jim.

Yeah, I don't get the "size" difference between L's folks are talking about. They add a cyl and thus a few inches, and the tires get a bit bigger with Hp, but that is minor size changes....

I tend to agree that the L3240 can be marginal on power.
Moving up to a 3540 is only a 3hp increase. For an additional $1320. Will three hp make that much difference? Frankly, I wonder why Kubota bothers producing both engines. Just going by the spec sheet, they appear to be the same except for a longer stroke on the 3540.:confused2: I can understand going up to a 3940. It's now a 6 1/2 hp increase plus it's a four cil. not a three.
Am I missing something?

Bill
