My drivers Ed. teacher was a football coach from another nearby HS. A Humpty Dumpty fellow that loved to eat. We were pretty much his chauffeurs to Dairy Queen, the local bakery, Hardees, etc. when he bothered to show up. I dont recall any dual controls.

I was talking to a highway patrol officer and I specifically asked him what car he gets for his family since he see all the highway wrecks.
He said he buys his wife the old "boats" or large pickup trucks because he see's people survive in them the most.

Not sure how any of us survived those old cars. Drove like crap. Looking for a place to crash. Cars are ten times more stable on their wheels today.

While I think they've gone way overboard on "safety" stuff in recent years, you're right those old cars were pretty scary in retrospect. 4 wheel drum brakes (only one circuit too), non-collapsible steering columns, non-padded dash, the list goes on.
At least you could see out of them, unlike cars of today.

Then there was the ease of getting into them vice the current 'crawl into a hole'. I bought a Ford 500 the first year they came out because the sat higher and one opened the door and sat down. No way was I going to join the fad and buy an SUV.

The first non farm vehicle I drove on the road was a 60s Chevy pickup. Drivers-ed was later and Chevy family car types, I do not recall the models.

My 65 Belair lived up to the term "Land Barge" It would sway and rock traveling down the road.

Yes that I remember, just cant get that feeling in today cars, even when I watch an old TV show like Hawaii 5-0 and before Mcgarrett could say "book-em Danno" he drives up in those big ole Fords, slam the brakes on and the car would rock back and forth..........

When I borrowed my sister's 4 door Torino my friends used to make sure they shut their doors in sequence, just like on "The FBI".

I wouldn't go so far as saying the ole cars was un safe, my 68 Gran Prix was like a tank and would do a lot damage on to todays cars in a head-on collision.

I dont know if one could ever thrash out Jeep talk completely, but I found this Jeep fixer-upper video that I thought was interesting. Guess Jeep back in the day had a fair amount of accessory's that almost turned it into a tractor.....
