I just saw this on ebay New bucket Thumb grapple for Skid steer loader tractor - eBay (item 150327674069 end time Feb-21-09 10:04:30 PST) Does anyone have any experience with a unit like this? Seeing it for the first time it seems pretty appealing. The thumb seems like a good econimcal fix what do you guys think? Any drawbacks? Should I pull the trigger on this or hold back and just get a grapple rake? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Those are pretty popular...as well as a similar one (I think possibly the original one) made by Andy Tatro.

I would think it depends on your use. If you use your bucket to pick up building debris from a pile and just need to hold it in the bucket, I think this would work great. But if you use it to rip up small trees and overgrown undergrowth, I think you need the bottom "teeth" of a regular root type grapple to dig and slide under the roots so you can lift them up before you clamp them with the top teeth. I just bought a Markham grapple. Although it is more that the E-Bay item, it also included the hoses and quickconnects that would probably run another $100, and it requires no welding or installation. It would also free up your bucket to use as a regular bucket without the top arm getting in you way. A 48" Markham light duty (which is still pretty stout) runs about $900 but if you factor in the hoses and installation, the gap narrows, and it will work way better for the use I mentioned. Just my opinion. You also will need to consider what quick connect your tractor has, because that could jack up the cost. Currently Markham makes a skid steer type and a John Deere type connection. If your tractor has one of those, you are in business. They could probably make any type you need, as they are good to custom build anything. Hope this helps.
