I would also think that using a diverter valve on the FEL controls also prevents you from using bucket functions (e.g. tilt, rollback) when you have the diverter active. Right?

Ken

Yes, but believe me there are precious few times that you would need to activate the grapple (open or close) at the exact same time that you need to dump or curl. I've used both rear remotes and a diverter valve. I think they are about equal and both are entirely acceptable.

A true electric over hydraulic system will allow you to open/close and simultaneously curl/dump but you'll spend about $1000 to have that system put in by a dealer. If you are good with hydraulics and electric then you can make up your own electric over hydraulic system for a few hundred bucks.

Why a diverter? Why not just a third valve like the two which are already there? Three controls instead of two. What am I missing here?

Well, that is essentially what the rear remote is, a third valve. The issue with any third valve is how you are going to control it. If you don't mind taking your hand off the FEL lever for a few moments (like shifting a 4 on the floor), then a rear remote works fine and doesn't interfer with the FEL controls at all. An electric over hydraulic set up essentially gives you a third function as well with the convenince of a toggle switch mounted right on the FEL joystick. The diverter valve is a compromise, and a popular one, as it is much less expensive than an electric over hydraulic setup and it allows you to keep your hand on the joystick.

I currently don't have a rear remote, and have two levers on the FEL upright to the right of the steering wheel for control of the FEL. My current controls have the right lever controling up/down and the left controling curl/uncurl. I would think that a third lever to the left of the other two would just add grapple open/close right with the other controls. QDs would allow it to be available for any other use needed at the end of the FEL. Eventually, I will probably add rear remotes for hydraulic capability at the rear. Putting it with the other FEL controls just seems to make sense to me and would leave any rear remotes open for any need at the back. It also seams like it would be cheaper as less piping and hoses would be needed.

You are essentially talking about putting in a set of remotes for the FEL. That's fine but I am not sure you would save much over putting in a second set at the rear and just using one of those sets to control the grapple. More likely to need two at the rear (TNT for example) and it really isn't such a big deal to install two at the rear if you are going to add one anyways.
