Okay,
I called Alamo Aggragates in Cleveland yesterday. They will load my trailer for $30 a ton for 1 & 1/2 gravel.

I just got 4 loads (60 tons total). The "304" (1-1/2 and smaller with fines) was $14.50/ton delivered. #4 (2") crushed limestone was $14.75/ton. It's about a 40 mile haul each way.

Locally if I haul myself I can get it for about $10-12/ton depending on what I get, but I can only haul 3 tons at a time.

We have a number of limestone mines within 50 miles, but they are all owned by Hanson PLC so there not much competitive pressure. I was told that prices are higher the closer the mine is to Cincinnati.

Probably a shortage of stone due to all the paving being done by the economic stimulas. Around here, they are paving everything in sight, most of which didn't even need to be paved. A Huge WASTE of money going on here.

Nothing new, they've been squandering tax money for years on unnecessary road projects. Five years ago, they repaved one of the local state roads. Two years later, they did it again. I believe the construction lobby contributes a lot of money to the politicians.

Since moving to Texas 7 years ago, I've noticed a huge difference in how often they pave the roads here compared to where I'm from in California. My understanding is that here in Texas, taxes raised for the roads have to be used for the roads. In CA, they use the money from the taxes on anything they want. Here, they pave and pave and pave again. I think they do it just to spend the money that they have in order to keep getting the same amount or more money next year. In CA, the roads are rated at some of the worse in the nation, but they never seem to pave them, and rarey fill in the potholes. The differnence is HUGE between the two states. Give the choice, I'd rather live in a state that wastes money fixing the roads all the time, compared to a state that ignores the problem and spends the tax dollars or pet programs that accomplish nothing.

Eddie... it's getting worse... just about have to wear a neck brace when I venture out on city streets... the pot-holes are bad and the rainy season hasn't started yet...

The street in the neighborhood was paved once and that was circa 1957... the city has budgeted paving secondary roads once per 100 years and it looks like they are sticking to plan...

Around here we can get either - 2 grades of sand, washed pea gravel or 1/2" - 3/4" washed river rock for $10 a ton - that's at the plant, not delivery. My regular trucker has a 24 ton load of either creek gravel or local chert (clay/rock mix, mostly rock) delivered for $175. Haven't bought crusher run in a long time so don't know what it's going for now.

Fuel costs, plain and simple.

Not just the fuel to deliver, but fuel to excavate, handle and load. In some places, it has gotten painfully high to order any gravel or any type. I put down 10 yards, should have doubled that, but... no could do. $$$
