If the 'road' is 6 feet wide the gravel truck won't fit. It will have to be dumped as the OP said, top or bottom.

Exactly! There's no gravel truck in the world that will fit a 6' path.

From a safety point of view, I would think the bottom would be better. But it would be easier from the top.

My experience with having the delivery truck spread the gravel has always been a disappointment. I would much rather work a pile and spread with the FEL. As far as hills goes, I have no idea? What are these "hills" you speak of? (Posted from Fort Worth.)

I had no issue with spreading the load with the tractor. A dump truck trying to spread is always a disaster unless it's multiple loads or a very wide area. The tractor can do it by itself with the loader, but if you have access to a box blade it will do a spectacular job!!! I'd got mine dumped at the bottom and carried the load to the top and back bladed it down hill, then use a box blade to smooth it out. Just MHO! :D

I would have it dumped at the top since, as others have said, gravity will be your friend. Then, back down the hill as necessary since the weight will be in the loader on the front. My opinion, but I'm no expert! :)

Just gotta find a driver with experience. There are many for whom spreading is no problem.:)

alot of opinions and according to your comfort level which one you go with, since the truck cannot spread it have it dump at the bottom of the hill and then you start there and dump a bucket full put your bucket in the float position and back drag leaving a smooth ride for the next bucket full. just my 2cents. be safe

I continue to subscribe to the "there are no stupid questions" and believe no matter how much we think we know can always learn more.

However, what might work best for an experienced operator might spell disaster for someone new to tractors. I like to travel backwards while spreading gravel out of my bucket and do it on flat land or hills, but I don't know that I would recommend it to others. I agree with those who advocate spreading downhill and especially with something light like a BX. If you can't carry much in your bucket going down hill then just make more trips if it is more comfortable to you. I know it can be frustratingly slow as I have put gravel on roads with a one mile round trip from the rock pile to the road as that is as close as a truck could get.

Be very careful that you don’t get going downhill and have your wheels lock up on you, that can be really bad.

Okay, OP here again. Thanks for all the comments, especially those who comprehended my original post where I mentioned a 6ft wide path. The truck is delivering 10yards 3/4 crushed clean tomorrow to either the upper or lower end of my property and I have to haul it from there, so I have to decide on dump site by morning. Again, if I go down (and it is steep) I am worried about slipping and the limited amount I can carry keeping the bucket low and the angle. Seems like way to many loads and I will constantly be spilling before I get to the path. Going up seems safer and more efficient but not sure the big truck can make it across neighbors property without crushing a 12in drainage/culvert pipe. Here are a couple pics to give you an idea. Going over to talk to him now.
