One more thing about my location is the housing market. Investing in $20K of solar will bring $0 in resale of my home. We have a 40% housing vacancy rate. The city of South Bend, IN is trying to tear down 1000 houses in 1000 days. While our home appraises for X dollars, we'd be lucky to 1/2 of that value if we tried to sell it. There are just too many houses on the market for less money. So those things have to be considered, too. If you're planning on moving before its paid off, will you get back what you invested? Other markets, I'm sure you might. Here... no way.
Turn Key solar is seen as a big selling point... also homes with the perfect orientation are marketed that way.
Could be a Bay Area thing... people will spend extra just to be green...
My home is mostly vintage... 1950 windows, 1960/70's appliances and my electric kWh hours averages 12 per day...
Only thing I have done is convert to CREE LED lamps in the old fixtures... noticed the difference right away with 30 cent per kWh from the utility...
A new trend is to size big enough to charge your Tesla or Leaf all electric...
A little off topic... multi pane windows add distortion when looking outside... more so at night... my view is spectacular and I can live with my single pane windows just fine... not sure how much I would shave off my 12 kWh per day if I dropped a bundle on new windows.
