Ground Hogs

Borrow a Jack Russel Terrier. If your hogs are still there after 2 days, the dog's defective.

I second the conabear trap: no mess except for a dead chuck, (or neighbors cat either way one less pest to bother ya :) :D ) I have taken 10+ dfrom my pole barn this way as the little suckers see me pull in and scatter and I couldn't get a bead on em with the 22. place it over the hole I think it was the 2nd one up from the bottom in size (220) or (240) something like that was it's # works great. HARD to get set, be careful or you will regret it :D

Smoke boms work too but much less satisfaction involved...

... CB longs ...

I've been using the CCI CB shorts for 10 years or so and have found them to be slightly quieter than the longs. Same ballistics. Thru a 24" barrel they are very quiet. Noticibly quiter than an 18" and, as you say, much quieter than a peestola. Nice to have in an old Win 12-C pump ... a few more shots than longs :)

We had a similiar problem with ground hogs 4 or 5 years ago. Living on the city limit I was not able to shoot them which was not really an option because I wasn't sure where they would go to and die. I used a large have-a-heart trap and caught 8 of them from under my lawn building. I relocated them to the country. My city officials told me to call the health departments animal control who, after I had bought a trap told me they loaned them for such problem animals.

As for skunks.......I tripped the trap at night so I wouldn't catch possums and skunks which I used a tarp to cover and take to the country too. Never got sprayed but didn't like that feeling of being so close to the business end of a skunk.

Good luck, it will be "almost" as fun as trying to keep squirrels out of your bird feeders;) Good luck.

Ive seen conibears used with results. Just make sure you find both holes as they get spooked easily when presented with a conibear and will use the other hole. Two traps two holes. Make sure you know what your doing. You can get your own hand/arm trapped which isnt fun especially if your out in the fields alone. Have some kind kind of preconcieved wedge or bar to pry trap apart as you only have one hand/arm to work with. I dont know if such a tool is already implemented.

I don't think your average pellet gun is going to instantly kill a groundhog. It may crawl back in the hole to die. I'd try the trap first.

I was wondering today how groundhogs stay so clean considering they live in a hole in the ground.

Where in the country did you let them go?

I haven't seen an official "groundhog release area" lately, not to mention one for skunks.

I sure wouldn't want anyone releasing his problem critters near my property -- I have enough of my own.

I think he turned them loose at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC 20500 to make the garden area more authentic to the real world.

Mine go to the Marine Corp. They have a live fire zone. :)

That reminds me of a point in my career when my squad of Seabees were practicing for a night fire demonstration up at Hunter Liggett, CA.

We set up early in the day to practice the routine when a nice 5 point (that's 10 point for us Texans) buck came walking over the impact hill without a care in the world. The battalion Gunny was screaming over the bull horn to cease fire and the buck made it out unscathed.:(

Only 2 M-60's and a dozen or so M-16's were sighted in on that critter. Should would have beat K-rats for dinner.:D

I can honestly say that's the only time in my life I've had a buck like that in my sights and didn't (couldn't) take the shot.

There could be some local wildlife animal rescue group that would relocate the groundhogs for you.
