My 98' 231 has this. You have to push the PTO lever forward. Pulling it back will put it in the 540 rpm selection.

So my question is: What in the world is the Ground Speed PTO selection used for? I know how it operates, but would like to know what attachments hook up to the PTO while using the Ground Speed selection and what would you use the attachment for?

Thanks,
Travis R

Ground speed pto was intended to power pto driven hay rakes, as well as ground driven manure spreaders. It was a standard feature on Massey Ferguson tractors for years. The concept never really hit the big time.

Thanks.

In my opinion, (from what very little bit I know about it), sounds like the Ground Speed PTO selection is actually useless compared to using the 540 rpm selection?? As far as I know of, I will never use the Ground Speed PTO. I don't see how I (or anyone for that matter) will ever come to need it.
I guess what I am trying to say is that it seems like all a tractor needs is the standard 540 rpm selection (unless you are running a PTO pump- where you would need the higher rpm PTO like the Yanmar gray market tractors have).

Thanks again,
Travis R

In 36 years, I've used the ground speed pto on my 150 eactly ZERO times. One of those good ideas that never really panned out.

when youre working on a really wet land, its usefull so you dont get stuck in the mud. chaff corn is harvested in the first weeks of the fall, and its very wet then.

Ive used it to get a baler unstuck, one that had been rusted fast. Just goe from forward to reverse a few times and some oil in the right places. took about 15min and it was good to go. Thats the only time I ever remember using it.

Are you saying the the PTO turns in reverse if the tractor is in reverse? I cant say as I have ever looked at mine when it is in GS but, I have never heard of that before.

i dont understand the manure spreader issue. if you have a ground driven manure spreader (i do), its driven by the wheels of the spreader...not the pto.

Hello Travis-R, the ground speed pto is obselete these days.
How ever when I was farming I could use ground speed on the PZ tedder if the lucerne (alfalfa in US) was a bit dry and not loose to much leaf. Apart from that I never used ground speed.

Groundspeed Pto essentially links the PTO to the transmission, the shaft then turn at the same ratio as the rear axles, and same direction.
So as you speed up ground speed, the pto will turn faster, change direction it will do the same.
It's still a feature available on new tractors today. In fact i currently have one in-stock with this option on it.
Market gardens tend to use it. Also really usfull if you want to drive the wheels on a trailer, this is where it was used the most on old, non 4WD tractors, by driving the trailer wheels you now have a 4wd tractor/implement, on new tractors, this would now be a 6wd machine. Really good for big trailers on hilly, soft country.

if you ever get a post hole digger stuck. You can jack up one rear tire and put it in reverse and ground speed and back it out

Can't say regarding the GS setting, but if you have a LIVE PTO, turning in reverse is not possible. The PTO turns with the engine.

Perhaps with the PTO in GS setting and the gear box in neutral, the PTO shaft would turn with the drive wheel direction. Worth a test.

if you had bad conditions and need to power the driving wheels on a trailer to help keep moving sounds like a good idea I know some military trucks had a system to power trailer axels

a trailer with and one with out, big diffrence

I am very glad to hear Massey has kept the option of GS pto. For just a homeowner mowing it isn't really a big deal. But we make hay and my grandpa had MF tractors and a MF hay rake. You can always get a MF hay take cheap because no one knows how to use one. You see MF hay rakes run off the pto which is way too fast if you use live pto but GS is perfect. Also if you cut hay with a gay conditioner you will clog from time to time. With a MF instead of digging it out you put it in GS and back up it spits it right out. Also do that with a round baler from time to time. Have done it with an auger before as well. We have also used it to diagnose issues with pto emplements just put it in low gear and it turns very slow so you can see it better. I also like the 2 stage clutch for engaging the pto slowly without the bang. I would love to have GS on all my tractors. It can really be a lifer saver. So now you know that it is very useful in the correct conditions.

I've seen it used to drive the belts in a precision vegetable seeder, instead of relying on ground drive wheels.

if only the PTO had its own little mini transmission. that could be directly tied together to the main transmission.

is the clutch a "double clutch", first pressing down dis engages tires, all the way pressing disengages pto? so you end up with an adjustable speed PTO?
