Maybe There's been times where I done something stupid because I just didn't know or just being naive. My dad always referred to it as street smarts and ya gotta believe the interanet is a pretty big road :) See people all the time stiffing service people (ie waiters, bar tenders etc) with no clue that that is how they earn a living and that the gov't taxes their projected or "assumed" tip income. -Ed

Personally...most times I'd be better off without those "service" people...I'd rather do it myself.

Excuse me? You "expect" $5 to take my simple order, bring me a glass of water, carry over a plate of food, and bring me a bill? Nah, I don't think so. You did less than 5 minutes work for me. You'll get a buck and that's still $12 an hour, more than your worth. You want REAL money? Get a REAL job. Waitressing is for school kids and second jobs for wives. You can't expect to raise yourself and your children on such a lowly job. Get an education, some skills...don't expect ME to pay your way because you "didn't like being married", or you "wanted to have a baby". Sorry, life is full of choices...make some better ones.

The REAL problem here is the destruction of the family...womens lib...but we can't talk about that...it's not politically correct.

That's all a joke, right? Are you familiar with the term "noblesse oblige"?

Sorry. I didn't mean to start an argument about "entitlements" or any other societal problems. I would have e-mailed him directly and posted his reply, if any, but I don't know how to do that on this site.
I would have to agree that there are people who are only interested in their own problems and once a reply is made that solves their problem they don't have the courtesy to reply with a simple "Thank You", or a reply that the suggestion fixed their problem.
Such is life.

I wouldn't worry about it too much Dave. A lot of people are like that; they just take and take and take, and never give anything in return.
The folks that participate with feedback and contributions are the ones that really matter.

Dang Joe.. that's a pretty poor attitude.

You are 'classing' people based on thier work and hourly wage.. that's uh.. wow.. pretty scarry.

I feel that all work is honorable. I'd rather see a guy working food service than riding unemployment.

By your logic of 'lowly' job I guess then other NECESCARY jobs like garbage man, waste water handlers and the such are well.. the dregs right? Heck.. maybee we shouldn't let certain people live in certain places right? the people that have lowly jobs or don't make much.. these are of course the people I'm refering to. Perhaps they should all have to live in a special section of the city or .. maybee even outskirts of town so the people with better jobs, more money, etc.. don't have to see them any more than needed.

And you think this is an education issue? Dude... open your eyes.. economy is bad right now.. some people are just happy to have any job right now.. college diploma or not.

I've known people with phd's doing manual labor because they wanted.. or needed to.

Heck.. my day job is folding right now due to the economy. In a couple weeks me and my college degree will be competing with the other 5% of floridians looking for work.. In the area I live in.. there just isn't much employment going on. I for sure won't be able to snatch another engineering job.. which means I'll probably have to hit retail, food service, or production work.. and just be happy that I'm making my mortgage payment and feeding my wife. I guess I'll be one of those 'lowly' people then! :(

I really hope your post was a joke!

Joe.. are you aware that the govt taxes a food service employee on about 7% of their gros food sales.. even if cheap people like you only throw them a buck.

lets look at your 5$ example, and assume a standard of 15% tip of meal price. That means you ordered a meal and a drink of $33.35. That waitress is getting taxed as if she made a $ 2.33 tip... even though the cheapskate only left her a buck.

I've always said if you can't afford to tip.. you shouldn't be eating out.

Also.. if you have a good wait person.. they will/should be doing more than taking an order, and seeing you one time to carry your food over and then bringing a bill.. there should be multi-stops involved checking with you to make sure your 'experience' and food are to your liking..e tc.

I've been in situations where I got bad food.. but had good service.. after a talk with the manager letting them know the food was low quality..e tc.. I still tipped the wait person based on their level of service.. since the food quality was not their fault... etc..

Chris-
So sorry to hear about your employment situation. I also don't believe any of those gov't numbers. How many people gave up looking for a job? I personnally remember when my wife got laided-off they threw her off unemployment at the first chance or excuse that they could find (double win for the government less people on unemployment means better numbers and less payout of earned benefits) GOOD LUCK -Ed

This is getting way off topic. My four children had to put up with the country club set and the a**holes that felt that waiters and waitresses were mere chattels who were there to serve their whims and did not deserve a tip. Some of the richer patrons felt that in spite of excellent service that it would be funny to leave a penny for a tip.
In spite of these people, my children have been able to graduate from college and achive financial success. Knowing what they went through, they make it a point to tip accordingly when they dine out at a restaurant. I hope you guys give the good waiters and waitresses a good tip when you eat out because tips are really where they earn enough money to live on. I personally tip at least 15%, and if the service is good I go 20%.
The guys who "fix" the problems with your tractors charge $40 to $60 per hour even if they don't fix your tractor, so who is the bad guy?
Lets get back to tractors!
