Hardfacing over hardfacing

I have an excavator bucket that I would like to add some hardfacing over existing hardfacing. Can this be done without any special care other than preheating. I only have an ac stick welder so what hard facing rod would you recommend?

Cleaning is all that is needed typically. They make rods that are made specifically for hard facing.

You really need to know what's on there now. If it's manganese based then you will need to use manganese. If you don't, It will be easily knocked off. Also many hard surface applications call for only 2 passes of thickness. If you need more you will need to use a build up material. Sometimes 7018 will work for that but I prefer actual Stoody build up rod. it gives a type of cush effect to the bead. Good Luck.

How can I tell if it is manganese? Could I lay a bead over it and beat it with a maul to see if it stays. Would that work?

Don't use the rods you linked to, not the best for dirt engaging because they are low impact resistant and only moderate abrasion resistance.

This should work, multi-pass and runs on AC.

In your case exactly following number of layers, etc. is not critical. Lay a few beads on, your AC machine should work very well for this, stick hardfacing often works better with AC and lowest amps that will make it stick.

If the new beads break off then you have to change what you did or the rod you used.

You can put on a layer of 7018 and then do put hardfacing over that, it works sometimes, creates a "cushion" between the hard layers. I wouldn't do that unless you knew that just putting the hardfacing on doesn't work.

Low a heat as you can, you don't want to dilute the puddle any more than necessary and it doesn't have to be pretty. I've used Stoody 31, more of a general purpose hardface rod with good results, used them on loader, excavator buckets............Mike
