Hat Etiquette

Hats should be worn outside only. In the USAF, hats were taken off indoors, the sole exception being if you were "under arms". Current hat wear is simply the manifestation of the disintegration of common courtesy.

There used to be east of Sacramento. My grandfather used to delight at gettin a cheap, loud, obnoxious tie from the flea market. Then he'd wear it to Pinnacle Peak just so he could have it cut off :D That restaurant has been gone for 20+ years now...

By the way there is a great steak place in Tucson (Pinnacle Peak) where it is not allowed to wear ties - they will come and cut them off, and there are zillions hanging from the ceiling (probably a good way to get rid of a tie you don't like!). But no problem wearing your hat, for sure.

It depends. In Scouts, the hat is part of the uniform, and can be worn even for Flags/Anthem(although they do salute, fingers to brim). It comes off in the dining hall though...

coming guys. your either being to harsh or too oldschool. Im a gulf war vet and know all about hat dicsipline (dont know how to spell it though), but for petes sake, we live in a different era and your gonna have to lighten up and let people do their thing. Its just a hat and this isnt the 1930's. Same argument could be had for the way we dress today when everyone back then wore a nice pair of slacks or a suit day in and day out. Same argument can be had for alot of things. You wont to complain about something, complain about how you can get locked up for running a belt across your misbehaving kid. We all got a good belt when we were bad. Nowadays, kids dont have to suffer consequences for their actions. kids say, "oh wow, what you gonna do, yell at me again?"

There was a day when eateries provided coat and hat racks. Those days are pretty much gone and even if there were a place to hang my hat at the door, it's not likely that I'm going to hang my $600 Stetson out of my reach. I prefer to have it next to me, but that can't always be done. :(

I take my hat off while dining even if it's a neighborhood "dive". What others do does not bother me much as long as they are not smoking. Now that would bother me.

Actually, in certain situations you can take advantage of an individual's manner of "hat wearing". For instance, if you are looking at a prospective employee and they have their baseball style hat on backwards, you should be already looking elsewhere.

Okay, here I am stereotyping. let's up the "anti" and go with the backwards hat and the pants/baggy shorts hanging way too low. Better factor in on constant cell phone interruptions. Want to deal with that?

Hats kind of depend on where you live. We live in farm country and when you go in to the local restaurants most of the farmers wear ball caps. Maybe their favorite seed brand logo or favorite tractor brand on their hat. I see nothing offensive about this. Just the way farmers do here. These are not punks or disrespectful folks.

I agree, times have changed and it's no big deal. Just like it's the norm today to wear jeans everywhere. Twenty years ago, I felt uncomfortable going out in jeans. Nowadays, that's all I have (well, okay, there is a suit for funerals.)

As several have said "what are you going to do with it at a restaurant?" The only place to put it is on your head!

Have you checked closely? Maybe their head is on backwards too....:D Reminds me of an old joke.....

Thats the problem too many folks have lightened up over the years ... the kids today have no respect or work ethic ... start by teaching them a few things when they are young ... Like when too and when not too wear a hat.

I always take off my hat indoors. Doesn't feel right to leave it on. I'm hoping people see me as quaint and old-fashioned.

OP is exactly right. It was "Urban Cowboy" that changed things, even though nobody remembers that movie any more.
