As long as it's not moldy you can still feed it to horses but it's not as good so that's why alot of guys will just feed it to the cows. As far as price you are right, the lower the quality the lower the price.

Chuck52, what are the walnut trees for??? walnuts or eventually lumber?? i had the idea to do that at my dads place in 1979, but he wasn't for it, so we just planted 4 walnut trees around the back yard..an now sure wish we hadn't, can't give the walnuts away, even when we gathered them..so we just haul them off so we can mow the yard.

The walnuts are for eventual lumber mainly. I get them cheap from the state conservation department and will add some every year for a while. The land they are on is separated from the rest of my small acreage by a drainage ditch, and though I could get hay from it, it is too small to be really worthwhile for that. Besides, I don't have any livestock and don't really want to get into the business of selling hay. As for nuts, there is supposed to be a market for black walnuts here in Missouri, though I suspect I'll never take advantage of it. I may use some myself, and give away any I can. It'll be years before I have to worry about it! In fact, since I'm in my fifties, I expect the walnut lumber is more likely to benefit my children or their children than me. I do hope that my walnut grove, which is located on the corner of a road named Walnut Grove, will look nice and provide some sound and visual screening from the fairly busy paved road it fronts. Open field or nice walnut grove with possible future value....the latter seemed to make sense in this case.
