When we were looking at property to buy, an interesting parcel came up for sale. I went to see it after work and I was not prepared for woods walking in the summer but we had learned if a property popped up on the market you had better get out to see it NOW. I was wearing shorts, Top Siders and no socks...
I get out to the place and it is a long narrow lot, I think it was 10-15 acres, but really narrow. The narrowness was done so that all lots would have access to a river. The lots were subdivided back in the 20's or 30's if I remember right. Anyway, the driveway going into the property was covered in vetch which I call tick weed because ticks LOVE to hang out in vetch. Luckily, the parcel next to the one for sale had been logged so I was able to walk in the tick free cleared area and see into the lot which had 15-20 year old hardwoods and the river frontage was wonderful...
Neighbors started arriving home from work so I talked to them and they told me a few things and said that I REALLY needed to walk down the driveway and see what was there.

In spite of the tick weed, off I went and WOWSER. The seller had lived in the woods. There was no house but an old school bus with a water bed and a shed built against the bus. There were old cars, 55 gallon drums, batteries, extension cords, an old boat, and assorted junk all over the place. The odd thing was that there was a new fence running in the woods but not tied to a corner. :confused3: You just walked up the driveway, seeing the junk, and suddenly a fence appeared. :confused3: Odd to say the least.
As I was pondering the junk yard and the mystery fence I hear a car driving up on the other side of the fence. This is all happening in woods and as I hear the car, I can just make out a driveway. The guy in the car gets close, sees me, stops and comes over to talk to me. Long story short, he had bought his land, the seller of the parcel I was looking at was living in the bus and shed. The problem was the bus and shed was half way across the property line. The new owner told Bus Man to move the bus off his land and gave him three months. At the end of three months, the bus/shed had not moved, so the landowner moved the bus/shed across the property line with a skid steer.
What a mess. We put out an offer which was not accepted but the seller did find a buyer for close to full price. :confused3::shocked: I hope the guy cleaned up the mess before the land was sold. I never did find the out house, there had to be one, but it might have been across the property line. Nor did I find an obvious trash dump.
What I did find driving back to town was hundreds of chiggers running up my legs!

I pulled into a gas station which had ONE can of Off for $5. I would have paid $20.

I emptied the can of Off on my legs but it was too late. The chiggers had chewed me up. The next few days were heck from the itching....
Later,
Dan
