I stuck the plow in some hard groung and something gave. The high/low range shift lever moved fwd and back but did not engage in either high or low range. i messed with it and got it stuck in high range so I can't start the tractor. i tried pulling the tractor fwd or back to see if that would free it up and it is still stuck. someone said there is a piece in the rear axle assembly that is meant to break under adverse conditions so I can check that and see if I can locate it through the pto selector cover plate. My to35 is the deluxe so it has ground/engine/neutral pto positions. the heavy piece that the hi/lo shift lever engages with is stuck now or I would try starting the tractor to see if I can slip the hi/lo back into gear. If I have to get into the gear box do I proceed by taking off hood, gas tank, power steering etc. until I get down to the gears and some kind of lever or shifting fork parts? If I have to replace the weak link piece in the rear axle assembly what will that involve? Thanks for any ideas on getting the right diagnosis and treatment.

If you have a local M-F dealer with a mechanic who's been there quite awhile he may be able to give you some hints for an easy way out of your dilemma.

Hi/lo is at the rear of the gear box, you must splitt it between gear and center housing.

I thought I had success; I got out the coupler which was not broken at the weak spot. I found the cotter pin that keeps the coupler engaged to both the trans and diff was sheared. I replaced it and put all back together. Something else is wrong because it has broken again. I suspect there are some bearings that support gears back there because the next gear back of the coupler seemed wobbly. Can I replace those by taking off the top cover over the back section of gears?

You are flying blind, give up and turn it over to a mechanic before taking anything else apart.

maybe you are right but although I don't know the proper names of parts it is how I have learned various trades and skills - the hard way maybe, but I try and I enjoy being independent. Thanks for the help and input everyone.

It is not like it is a new tractor under warranty, so cannot lose much and good for you wanting to fix it. Trouble is the old guard that knew how to fix the old girls are not around as much as used to be.

I will get castrated here for saying this, but if you believe that starting it will help solve your problem you can make sure that the transmission and PTO are both in neutral; set the brake and trig the wheels; check again to ensure that tranny and PTO are both in neutral; then turn key on and short across the solenoid.
