That's no fun!

Its no fun and nothing is learned. With tractor mechanic labor rates if you can't fix it you should buy new with a warranty. You will exceed the purchase price of a older tractor fast. I'm 64 and only paid one mechanic. When I was 18 I caught a mechanic in a lie. That mechanic didn't know I grew up on a farm and wasn't dumb mechanically. He did me a favor. It been a great learning experience.
I may be mistaken but I think most vintage tractor owners do their own work.

let us know what you find wrong with it so we can learn something

I think you are right Mllud, These old TO's aren't really that difficult to work on. The transmission comes apart fairly easily. There are a few things like shafts within shafts, and snap rings that will fit none of your snap ring pliers that cause a little confusion. When you are done you will look back and say it was easier than I thought it would be. I'd advise having a manual and read it in advance and to take pictures along the way. These forums are a lot of help when you need it too.

They are pretty straight forward. That manual pays for itself quickly and is needed. I like to get a piece of cardboard and lay the parts out in the order that they come off, Cell phone camera's are handy as you say. And forums like this are full of helpful experienced and advise. I bought a skid steer that had a blown engine and it all was disassembled. I second guessed my decision when I got it home. A forum helped me through the sticky parts. All the combined years of experience that is on these forums have given a place for knowledge to be shared and saved for future searches. That wasn't around when some of us were younger.

OK you guys have encouraged me and I'm going to pull the tractor into the shop as soon as I finish butchering the cow and can make a work place. Heated with a woodstove/barrel stove. Manual is on the way. When I need parts, what are the sources you have found to be helpful. Thanks so much for taking time to offer some guidance and I will post my progress and very likely some questions on the way.

On the first page transmission reassembly starts the on last paragraph. Just showing
Here are four pages of transmission assembly out of my 203 manual. Its an example of what your manual will be like. NOT the book for your tractor. I hope the pages enlarge enough to read.

All your tools and-
A good set of snap ring pliers
A set of picks
small screwdrivers. Picks and small screwdrivers tp assist in getting under snap rings. The beveled edge snap rings are a little tricky. patients! Careful the snap rings can slip off and go flying. Safety glasses. I'm sure I missed needed tools.
Vaseline to reassemble needle bearings This is a 203 transmission. $52 for my repair manual is priceless , almost.
Make that work area a place to enjoy. Doing repairs is just part of machine ownership.

Sorry about horizontal pages
Page 2 is blurry

There is a place in Sunnyside, Washington called DW Motor Machine that was able to track down every part I needed, except cam bearings, to do a total overhaul my TO35. In addition, Deral, the owner, and his son Don both know these old tractors, especially Fergusons, inside out and are easy to work with and eager to help you. I have talked problems with them over the phone and have steered me in the right direction. I also know they ship parts all over the world. Their website: Home ph. 509 882 4362. To start, if you can't find a manual, they can.

Nice of you all to help. I have taken things apart. major bearing destruction, pinion, ring gear, pinion bearing sleeve, two cone bearings and pinion pilot shaft bearing and associated snap rings all must be replaced. I found Bundy's Bear on youtube doing a mf 135 tractor so I have gotten some tips from that. Yesterday's Tractor does not have my parts. I have a 40 tooth ring gear and they have only 37 and they don't have the all important sleeve that holds the two big bearings where the pinion shaft turns in the sleeve part and goes thru to the diff case. Great fun so far! Thanks, I will try DW's MM for parts and there is an AGCO dealer 50 miles from me that I will call.

You may have to use that dealer but they will kill you.
Consider salvage rear end. If replacing the ring and pinion as a set you may be able to use the 37 tooth. I don't know what that would do to your gear ratios. Someone here will know better than me. Check options.
